Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

The diesel engine has been recognized as the most promising powertrain of the foreseeable future due to its superior thermal efficiency and reliability. Modern emission standards and customer demands have increased the need for advanced design theories for diesel engines.

By focusing on engine performance and system integration, this book establishes the theory of diesel engine system design, including the approaches used in its modeling and analysis. Diesel Engine System Design links everything diesel engineers need to know about engine performance and system design in order to master all the essential topics quickly and apply the techniques to solve practical design problems. Part 1 provides detailed coverage of the fundamental concepts and generic techniques in diesel engine system design. It starts with the analytical design process followed by the theories on durability, reliability and optimization. Part 2 goes on to present the fundamentals of dynamic and static diesel engine system designs by introducing engine thermodynamic cycle and vehicle powertrain performance, followed by the critical boundary conditions for engine system design in the areas of combustions, emissions and aftertreatment. Part 3 explores dynamics, friction and NVH (noise, vibration and harshness), including a comprehensive coverage on valvetrain and piston assembly. Part IV proceeds with thermodynamic first and second law analyses on heat rejection and air system including EGR and turbocharging, followed by transient performance and engine controls before summarizing subsystem interaction and system specification design.

Book News Annotation:

The subject is becoming increasingly important because of the diesel engine's potential for superior fuel efficiency and reliability. It's also complex and multifaceted, involving many people. Xin works in private industry as a specialist in diesel engine system design, and one reason he wrote this text is to mitigate the disconnect between academic experiences and the work place. Another reason was the need for a comprehensive reference that gathers information scattered in the literature of company reports, journals, and even the oral accounts of engineers. The author also wanted to present a unified and systematic theory about diesel engine system design that would be useful to people in various areas of the organization and would facilitate collaboration. This volume begins with an extensive listing and decoding of nomenclature and of abbreviations and acronyms. Coverage begins with fundamental concepts and continues with the engine thermodynamic cycle and vehicle powertrain performance; dynamics, friction, and noise, vibration and harshness; and heat rejection, air system engine controls, and system integration. Synopsis:

Diesel engine design is highly complex, involving many individuals and companies from original equipment manufacturers to suppliers. A system design approach for setting up the right engine performance specifications is vitally needed to streamline the processes. This book links everything a diesel engineer needs to know about engine performance and system design in order to master all the essential topics quickly; the focus is how to use advanced analysis methods to solve practical design problems. Numerous case studies and examples illustrate advanced design approaches using engine cycle simulation tools. The central theme is how to design a good engine system performance specification at an early stage of the product development cycle.
