Timeless classic BMW styling, coupled with relatively low market values, make the E21 a great choice for enthusiasts wanting a sporty, fun-to-drive classic that doesn’t break your pocket. This buyer’s guide is a great tool for the seasoned enthusiast and potential owner alike, offering advice that can only come from years of ownership experience. Don’t buy an E21 3 Series without it!

About the Author

Over five years Jimbo meticulously dismantled multiple donor cars as he combined the best of old and new parts into his E21. He contributes DIY-articles and advice to the bimmerforums.com E21 community, and is one of the co-founders of E21Legion.net, a website that allows users to publish their own E21-themed pages.  Jimbo credits the E21 community for providing a healthy hands-on diversion from his MBA financial analysis-type work.

In contrast to Jimbo, Josh Cook has a lifelong passion for classic BMWs that began with his father's ’73 2002, leading to the purchase of his first car at age 17 – an ’81 320i that he still drives daily. A self-taught mechanic, he has spent 12 years working on E21s, during which he has completed an empty shell restoration of his own car. This experience has made him intimately familiar with nearly every aspect of owning, restoring and modifying a 1st generation 3-series. Josh is an active member in the E21 community, most notably at bimmerforums.com, where his passion for BMWs, mechanical engineering education, relentless pursuit of perfection and willingness to help others have made him an invaluable resource to countless E21 enthusiasts.
