Led by their primarchs, the Word Bearers and World Eaters Legions ravage the realm of Ultramar

The Shadow Crusade has begun. While the Ultramarines reel from Kor Phaeron’s surprise attack on Calth, Lorgar and the rest of the Word Bearers strike deep into Ultramar. Their unlikely allies, Angron and the World Eaters, continue to ravage each new system they come across – upon the garrison planet of Armatura, this relentless savagery may finally prove to be their undoing. Worlds will burn, Legions will clash and a primarch will fall.

The Fat Englishman, April 28, 2014 (view all comments by The Fat Englishman)
I've been an avid reader of the Horus Heresy series since they were announced at one of Games Workshop's Game Days in the mid '00s. The thing that drew me most to "Betrayer" was the tantalizing promise of revelations regarding the still-mysterious backgrounds of Angron, Lorgar and Roboute Guilliman, although finding out the aftermath of Calth was also a factor.

As far as the story goes, Aaron's natural flair for descriptive prose is unmatched. Though at times I felt that perhaps he over-indulged a little to the detriment of the story's pace, even these quieter moments of adding detail to the world in which he wrote were well-placed and ultimately added to the excitement of the novel's climax. I particularly enjoyed the engaging and creative approach he took to expanding on the character of a Post-Isstvan-Atrocity Lorgar, who until this novel admittedly seemed to me more of a bookish, perhaps even wimpy shadow of the same character portrayed in other series under the Black Library umbrella.

Without giving away any spoilers, I can definitely say that this one is worth a look! Any book I can picture playing out in my mind, movie-like, is worth the money and the time to read it in my opinion.

For those that are looking for a new Sci-fi series to read but may not necessarily be aware of the Warhammer 40000 mythos and game, i'd recommend starting at square one with Horus Rising by Dan Abnett. Betrayer, however, is definitely a gem to look forward to on your climb up the reading order.
