Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

The Scythians were nomads who roamed the Steppes of Russia during the first millennium B.C. before settling in the region to the north of the Black Sea, where they came into friendly contact with Greek traders. Their distinctive 'Animal style" of art is of a kind now widespread in Central Asia as far west as Kazakhstan and Siberia. On coming into contact, first with the civilizations of the Near East, and then with the Greek world, they adopted their motifs; and by the fifth and fourth centuries they were employing Greek craftsmen. This book is based on the contents of six Scythian tombs from Nymphaeum (a Greek colony in the Crimea) excavated in 1868--gold jewelry, silver plate, pottery, armor and weapons--with previously unpublished contents of a princely Thracian burial found at Dalboki, east of Stara Zagora in North Central Bulgaria, in 1879.

Synopsis:
