Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Pattern Magic is the cult pattern-cutting book from Japan. Taking inspiration from nature, from geometric shapes and from the street, this book harnesses the sheer joy of making and sculpting clothes. The book takes a creative approach to pattern cutting, with step-by-step projects for fashion designers and dressmakers to enjoy.

All the basic information you need to start pattern cutting is included, from the basic block to measurements and scaling. Each project is beautifully illustrated with clear diagrams and photographs showing the stages of construction, the toiles and the finished garments. These easy-to-follow illustrations and detailed instructions make it easy to create stunning, sculptural clothes with a couture look.

Review:

"What a fabulous book — it is so inspiring! The cutting techniques are 3D lateral thinking in cloth — fashion engineering! Presented simply and gracefully, this publication is a creative treat." Gael Henry, Senior Associate Lecturer — Fashion, Northumbria University

Review:

"This book is fabulous. The English language edition makes the techniques accessible to the novice and students alike. My students will now be able to incorporate the ideas into their coursework with ease." Mary Gottlieb, Parsons, The New School for Design

I have been drooling over this book since I first encountered it in Japanese, so when I bumped into it on the shelves at Powell's in an English translation, my heart literally began to race with happiness.

While the written instruction does provide some guidance, I expect to spend a lot of time playing with the concepts to create a predictable result. That said, I can't recall a single book or magazine that has so inspired me to sew.

The layout and photography are also fantastic and I love how clearly she demonstrates that these ideas are just a foundation for a thousand variations.

I highly recommend this book, even if only for daydreaming and better understanding construction.
