Some of my favorite stories as a child were the Moomin books by Tove Jansson.  A couple of years ago, I discovered that she also did a comic strip for the Evening News, a London newspaper, and I fell in love all over again.  This year, I found out that the Moomins are also in a series of picture books written and illustrated by Jansson.  This is the first one to be re-printed.  I love the stories, but the book's beautiful design is what makes it one of my favorites of the year.

Publisher Comments:

In a delightful, curious game of what comes next, Moomintroll travels through the woods to get home with milk for Moominmamma. A simple trip turns into a colorful adventure as Moomintroll meets Mymble, who has lost her sister, Little My. Along the way, they endure the hijinks of all the charming characters of the Moomin world, including the Fillijonks and Hattifatteners. Will Moomintroll ever make it home safe and sound?

A beautiful and boisterous story by internationally acclaimed childrens author Tove Jansson, this picture book is sure to tickle the fancies of parents and kids as well as Moomintroll fans everywhere!

Review:

"First published in 1952, the late Jansson's first picture book to feature the Moomins returns with its droll, rhyming text and singular characters intact. Bringing home a thermos of milk, Moomintroll, who resembles a small, white hippopotamus, meets Mymble, searching for her lost sister, along with other creatures. Throughout, die-cuts create a spooky, layered effect, offering a tantalizing peek at what's to come. Readers are repeatedly asked what might occur next in the story, drawing them in further. From the bold colors and oddball creatures to expressive variations in font and inventive die-cuts, the book remains a kid-friendly package and a wonderfully weird vision. All ages."
