Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

The Koran is one of the most influential works in the history of literature, and the greatest literary masterpiece in Arabic. It is the supreme authority and living source of all Islamic teaching, the sacred book that lays out all of Islams creeds, rituals, ethics, and laws. Revealed to the Prophet Mohammed by the angel Gabriel, it has been called “a glorious symphony” that moves men and women to ecstasy and awe. E. H. Palmers superb translation brings unsurpassed clarity to the text, while R. A. Nicholsons erudite but accessible introduction places Mohammeds story in a historical, religious, and social context that illuminates the Korans sometimes conflicting dictates and revelations.

Synopsis:

"This translation of the Koran by E.H. Palmer was first published in 1900"--T.p. verso.

This version of the Quran is good, but lacking in some areas. I didn't agree with the introduction by R.A. Nicholson and I thought it was too short. Perhaps he could have offered more information about Islam in his introduction.
That aside, the book itself is beautiful and it's small making it easier to carry around. The notes clarify the text.
If you are a Muslim then I would suggest looking for a different version.
This version seems more oriented towards people who are looking for a copy of the Quran just to read and not to study.
Also, I would have liked the book more if Arabic was provided next to the English text.
So, I will buy another copy of the Quran but this will do for now.
