Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Poetry. FIRST WORDS was begun in 1995 as an exercise in which Messerli embedded the first word or two of poetry by other poets, but the series gradually transformed into a personal document of despair and potentiality — "Through what beautiful strung / adventure will next / trot — its own energies." Messerli is the author of eight books of poetry, including A LONG WITHOUT, AFTER, and THE WALLS COME TRUE. Each is available from SPD.

Synopsis:

A new book of poetry by Douglas Messerli.

Synopsis:

Begun as an exercise in which Messerli embedded the first word or two from lines of poetry by other poets, First Words gradually transformed into a personal document of despair and hope in the years 1995–1997. Messerli’s work has long been centered on wit and wordplay, but here a new romanticism enters his writing as he struggles to make meaning of fire, flood, riot, earthquake, personal events, and age.

About the Author

Besides editing Green Integer and, previously, Sun &Moon Press, Douglas Messerli is the author of numerous works of poetry, drama (under the name Kier Peters), performative works, and fiction. His most recent writings are After, Bow Down, Letters from Hanusse (written as Joshua Haigh), and the The Sorry Play, translated into Portuguese. In 2002 he was awarded a grant from the Foundation for Contemporary Performance Arts.
