Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

English summary: Normally, the so-called proto-apocalyptic texts Ez 38-39, Joel 1-4 and Zech 12-14 are understood as the first step to apocalypticism; however, they contain independent conceptions of the future, which rarely are perceived according to their intrinsic value. These texts, which originated in the late Persian and in the Hellenistic Period, are centrally placed in the composition of the Books of Ezekiel and of the Twelve Prophets, from where they radiate in their contexts. They expect the assault of the nations, which is struck back by YHWH. They hope for the final establishment of God's universal kingdom, which is accompanied by the renewal of Israel. The future fate of the nations is described differently: as total extermination or as an order for pilgrimage. In their expectation of the future, the texts distinguish between a near and a remote future. In the near future, God will turn the immediate distress away. In the remote future, he will establish his everlasting kingdom. In contrast to apocalyptic texts, these texts don't distinguish between two aeons, but they expect the future salvation within this historical period. German text.
