Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Based on the Pali Text Society editions of four canonical texts, the Suttanipata, the Dhammapada, the Theragatha and the Therigatha, this index is useful for students and scholars of Pall and Classical Buddhism alike. Laid out in a clear, easy-to-use format that maintains the words' original meaning, this index allows readers to engage in in-depth study of these four classic canonical texts. Scholars and students will find the reverse index particularly useful for research involving fragments of manuscripts and for finding partial parallels to a pada. Furthermore, the inclusion of all four texts in this edition allows scholars and students to conduct research without having to consult multiple indexes.

Synopsis:

A Pada Index and Reverse Pada Index to Early Pali Canonical Texts will help scholars analyze the early Buddhist canonical texts and produce critical editions of these texts. The indexes will facilitate systematic textual analysis of vocabulary, structure, meter, etc. This index is unique in that the authors used computers to process and analyze a huge volume of data from these early sources.
