Este libro hace un repaso histórico de los últimos seis siglos desde la perspectiva de los conflictos bélicos. Se centra en el mundo moderno y el uso de las armas de fuego para conseguir situaciones de poder. La obra hace especial énfasis en la dimensión técnica y tecnológica de las guerras y sus repercusiones humanas y sociales. Es decir, cuenta cómo los arcabuces acabaron con el mundo de la caballería en el siglo XV, cómo empezó la guerra sin reglas en el siglo XVII, de qué forma aparecieron las armas de artillería en el siglo XVIII y cómo se dio la impresionante carrera armamentística del siglo XX. A pesar de que el tema del libro es la guerra, el autor no se limita a contar hechos, batallas, guerras o las vidas de militares famosos, sino que hace una reflexión acerca de la interacción entre armas, soldados, organización, logística, mandos y voluntad de victoria en un determinado contexto territorial o espacial. Asimismo, analiza cómo este desarrollo militar condiciona en muchos aspectos el orden mundial. La Breve Historia de la guerra moderna al estudiar las técnicas, las tecnologías y las casuísticas consigue definir de manera consistente y documentada el verdadero rol político y social de los conflictos.

About the Author

Francesc Xavier Hernàndez Cardona is a historian and tenured professor of social sciences at the University of Barcelona. In recent years he has specialized in military history and has published various works on war and conflicts, including works on the War of the Spanish Succession, the Punic Wars, and the Spanish Civil War. He has also studied singular battles like those of Empuries (195 BC), Muret (1213) or the Battle of the Ebro (1938), and has also participated in the process of making museum out of different military monuments like the Iberian fortress of Calafell, the Renaissance walls of Ibiza, and the walls of Ceuta. Xavier Rubio Campillo is a computer engineer and researcher at the University of Barcelona. He is specialized in the study of military conflicts through artificial intelligence, geographic information systems, and game theory. He has worked on the simulation of galley combats and in the recreation of Caesars wars. In the field of military archeology he has coordinated pioneering experiments in the exploration of battlefields of the War of the Spanish Succession: Almenar y Salamanca. As a member of the ESTOC (European Studies of Terrain of Conflict) university network he has participated in the exploration of diverse European battlefields from the 16th and 17th centuries. He has contributed articles to International journals like Ancient Warfare and has written monographs on 17th Century battles (Almenar). He is the administrator of the specialized military history website www.polemos.org.
