Publisher Comments:

Emmeline knows shes not supposed to explore the woods outside her settlement. The enemy that wiped out half her people lurks there, attacking at night and keeping them isolated in an unfamiliar land with merciless winters. Living with the shame of her grandmothers insubordination, Emmeline has learned to keep her head down and her quick tongue silent.
When the settlement leader asks for her hand in marriage, its an opportunity for Emmeline to wash the family slate clean—even if she has eyes for another. But before shes forced into an impossible decision, her dreams urge her into the woods, where she uncovers a path she cant help but follow. The trail leads to a secret that someone in the village will kill to protect. Her grandmother followed the same path and paid the price. If Emmeline isnt careful, she will be next.

Review:

“Oliver’s deeply emotional and incredibly well-honed prose commands the readers’ attention and captures their hearts. With a pulse-pounding tempo and unforeseen twists and turns, Lauren Oliver has opened the door on a fantastic new series; the second book can’t come soon enough.” --Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

Review:

“In [Oliver’s] dystopian America, love has been outlawed as the life-threatening source of all discord. Lena’s gradual awakening is set against a convincing backdrop of totalitarian horror. The abrupt ending leaves enough unanswered questions to set breathless readers up for volume two of this trilogy.” --School Library Journal (starred review)

Synopsis:

From the acclaimed author of Before I Fall comes her powerful second novel, a stunning tale of star-crossed romance, set in a world where love is forbidden. Lena Haloway has always accepted the government's decree that love is a disease that must be eradicated--but then she meets Alex.

Synopsis:

Ninety-five days, and then I'll be safe. I wonder whether the procedure will hurt. I want to get it over with. It's hard to be patient. It's hard not to be afraid while I'm still uncured, though so far the deliria hasn't touched me yet. Still, I worry. They say that in the old days, love drove people to madness. The deadliest of all deadly things: It kills you both when you have it and when you don't.

Lauren Oliver astonished readers with her stunning debut, Before I Fall. In a starred review, Publishers Weekly called it "raw, emotional, and, at times, beautiful. An end as brave as it is heartbreaking." Her much-awaited second novel fulfills her promise as an exceptionally talented and versatile writer.

I tend to like the dystopian novels in the young adult form because they are so rich for discussion. I was describing this to my mother who has a love for these types of books like me, as having more similarity to The Giver rather than Hunger Games. Both deal with societal control but this one tends to be more like The Giver because of the dulling down of emotions. I really enjoyed this book and felt for the main character who felt different from the start because of her mother. I can't wait for the next book because the ending really leaves me wanting more. I will definitely be pre-ordering the next book to get it as quickly as possible.
