Publisher Comments:

The real world of law enforcement often bears little similarity to the action-packed police dramas depicted on television and in the movies. Many people who are drawn into a career in law enforcement have little knowledge about the trials and tribulations faced by police officers in contemporary society. Author James Warner offers an objective point of view on this crisis in his insightful book 101 Reasons Why You Should Not Become A Cop.

With a diverse background including over nineteen years of experience as a police officer, traffic officer, police supervisor, and field-training supervisor, Warner delivers an honest portrayal of the negative aspects of law enforcement. He has spent numerous years collecting true-life experiences from present and retired officers-and from ex-police officers who resigned from the force. Some of the stories include:

  • The Heavy Badge Syndrome
  • Injuries on the Job
  • The Quasi-Military Nature of Law Enforcement
  • Marriage Is a Hobby

101 Reasons Why Not To Become A Cop is a valuable resource for anyone considering a career in law enforcement, as well as a source of humor and comfort for veteran officers.

I bought this book to see if it would be something good to give to a young friend who recently enrolled in a local university and is studying criminal justice - not to try to persuade her to change her major, but just to see if there were some good hard truths that she needed to know. Well, this is a book that she, I and everyone should read. In particular, anyone considering a career in criminal justice, but also rookie cops, veterans, and us civilians too. There are things here that every cop should be reminded of, and every civilian should be aware of. Mr. Warner's outlook on criminal justice is exactly what every citizen of a decent society should be looking for, and by reading this book we can learn what we can do to help cops do their jobs, not get bent and not burn out. The man has respect and compassion for his fellow officers and for law-abiding citizens, and a whole lot more understanding and sympathy for the law-breakers than most people on his side of the line are willing to show. He never exhibits the kind of contempt for civilians in general that sometimes shows through in books by law officers. And he doesn't just have good sentiments - he also has written them up in a literate and readable way. I say if you have the slightest idea you might be interested in this book, go ahead and buy it. It's only six dollars to download and I can assure you it is well worth it. Thanks Officer Warner and Powell's Book Store for making this DRM-free edition available.
