Wildwood Signed Special Editionby Colin Meloy and Carson Ellis
Jill, Powells.com: Why did you want to make the special edition of Wildwood?
Colin Meloy: Going into the project, we had this idea, based on some book designs that we'd seen and really loved, of doing something elaborate and classic — something that wouldn't necessarily be that enticing to either middle-grade booksellers or kids. [Laughter]
Carson Ellis: It basically hinged on doing a cloth-bound, foil-embossed cover.
Meloy: With the foldout map. In the beginning, we met with all these publishers, and we would kind of sheepishly say, "We'd really like it if we could do this," and they would all laugh and say, "Anyway..." [Laughter] So, we knew going into it that not only was it sort of unlikely, but it would be expensive, and it just wasn't realistic.
Ellis: And we felt strongly that we wanted to make a book with a normal price point that everyone could buy and that still looked really good.
Meloy: It would have been too daunting to kids to walk around with that kind of book. So, we floated the idea of maybe doing a smaller print run for people who would like that kind of aesthetic, and that's what the special edition really is: it's the edition we initially dreamed about, an alternative, in another world, where you could have all the things that you wanted.
Ellis: The regular hardcover has a map, but we had initially wanted it to be a foldout map...
Meloy: But we wanted the regular hardcover to be a book that kids could just take and read in bed, or throw on the ground...
Ellis: Or have in their knapsacks, or whatever. We were really sad to let go of the idea of that foldout map, but instead we did it on the endpapers, which I think looks really good.
So, that's another great thing about the deluxe edition, you'll have the foldout map, and it'll be in color, which the other one isn't. So, it's an alternate version with some bells and whistles that we'd always secretly sort of wanted.
