Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

This abridgement of the world's most authoritative dictionary of ancient Greek is based on the 1883 revision. It includes some discussion of word usage, citing examples and characteristic phrases. Generally speaking, only words used by late writers and scientific terms have been omitted from the full lexicon. From Homer downwards, to the close of Attic Greek, care has been taken to include all words, as well as those used by Aristotle, Plutarch in his Lives, Polybius, Strabo, Lucian, and the writers of the New Testament.

Synopsis:

Founded upon the seventh edition of Liddell and Scott's Greek-English lexicon.

The indispensible and unrivalled Greek lexicon (there isn't any other available in the English-speaking world) in a size suited to a student or home bookcase. Though I used the big lexicon during school days, I am quite comfortable with the smaller format now that I am away from formal studies. Of twinkling interest, the Liddell (rhymes with riddle) co-author of this work happens to be the father of Alice Liddell of Lewis Carroll fame. Henry Liddell was Dean of Christ Church Oxford when Carroll ne Charles Dodgson was a math tutor at the college. The rest is history.
