Publisher Comments:

An unforgettable epic romantic thriller about a girl from the future who might be able to save the world... if she lets go of the one thing she’s found to hold on to.

Follow the rules. Remember what happened. Never fall in love.

This is the story of seventeen-year-old Prenna James, who immigrated to New York when she was twelve. Except Prenna didn’t come from a different country. She came from a different time — a future where a mosquito-borne illness has mutated into a pandemic, killing millions and leaving the world in ruins.

Prenna and the others who escaped to the present day must follow a strict set of rules: never reveal where they’re from, never interfere with history, and never, ever be intimate with anyone outside their community. Prenna does as she’s told, believing she can help prevent the plague that will one day ravage the earth.

But everything changes when Prenna falls for Ethan Jarves.

From Ann Brashares, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series, The Here and Now is thrilling, exhilarating, haunting, and heartbreaking — and a must-read novel of the year.

Review:

"Best known for her Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants books, Brashares forays into science fiction in this fast-paced, gripping, and romantic novel about a girl from a future that seems eerily possible. Seventeen-year-old Prenna James is from the year 2098, but she, her mother, and nearly 1000 other Travelers have fled an Earth devastated by climate change and plague, and are now living in 2014. The Travelers are a tight-knit and secretive community, and their 12 cardinal rules forbid everything from seeking outside medical care to interfering in the 'natural sequence' of time or engaging in 'intimate' relationships with outsiders. Prenna has long had a crush on her classmate Ethan, but she has always followed the rules until a mysterious homeless man upends Prenna and Ethan's lives, and she begins to question her community's dictates and intentions. Brashares focuses on Prenna and Ethan's burgeoning romance, rather than the nitty-gritty details of her time-travel premise, and her fans will be happy to find that her prose is as resonant and realistic as ever. An Alloy Entertainment property. Ages 12 – up. Agent: Jennifer Rudolph Walsh, William Morris Endeavor." Publishers Weekly Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.

If you take anything away from this book, it is this: Don't trust Google Glasses.

I was really intrigued by this book--Dystopian is a big deal these days, but this is a slightly different twist on it. Instead of being set in a Dystopian world, this story is set in the present day (I mean, REALLY present--chapter 1 starts on April 24, 2014!) and the main character has time traveled back from a dystopian future.

There is a lot to commend this book--the plot is unique, but still fits in the uber-hot Dystopian genre. There is the whole thing with the Google Glasses (to be fair, they aren't actually Google Glasses--but, well, if you read the book you'll know what I mean), an appealing heroine, and a realistic teen romance. And, honestly, I was entertained by this book--I read it in two sittings, which is pretty unusual for me and my schedule.

Brashares touches on a number of topics--climate change, cults, and information privacy to name a few. She does quite a good job of weaving these into the story so that the reader doesn't feel like they are slogging through a lecture, but the story still seems timely.

Unfortunately, though, I felt this book was lighter than it needed to be. While I enjoyed reading it, I felt a little like I had been gypped once I finished it. Brashares was onto a good thing here and I think she could have developed and fleshed it out more to do the story justice.

I'd still recommend this book because it is a unique and entertaining story--and it is a quick read, even if it shouldn't be.

Author Ann Brashares shifted from editor to full-time writer when her popular 2001 YA novel, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants climbed the book charts, spawned several sequels and was adapted into a Warner Brothers film. Her latest effort " The Here and Now " shows the author’s capability to transition to a different genre. This dystopian novel involves time travel, forbidden romance and mystery. I am proof that one doesn’t have to be a big sci-fi person to enjoy this book. A single act of murder is about to change the course of history unless Prenna and Ethan can stop it from happening. The development of these two characters was solid, their behaviors plausible but often exposed naivety that could be quite frustrating. The twists and turns kept me guessing and intrigued. A quick and entertaining read.

Prenna James is now seventeen but when she was twelve she immigrated to New York. Prenna didn’t come from a different country but a different time. She came from the future where there are mosquito-borne illnesses that have changed into a pandemic, killing millions of people and leaving the world in ruins.

Prenna and some others escaped to the present time and they have to follow strict rules. Rules to keep them safe. They can never reveal where they are from or interfere with history and never be intimate with anyone outside their community. Prenna has been good at doing what she is told. She also believes she can help prevent the plague that sent them back in time.

All of that changes when she meets Ethan Jarves and falls in love.

This is a great story on what if. The possibilities that this story puts out there make for a read that is sure to stay with readers for a long time to come. The world portrayed in the future is a scary possibility but it also makes for an engrossing read. The characters are fascinating and complex. It will also have readers hoping for more books to go with this one. It is a young adult book but adults will find it interesting too because it will definitely get readers thinking and talking. This is one to definitely check out. It has a slight cliffhanger at the end that is sure to have readers wanting more books to go with this one.
