This volume explores the theoretical, design, learning, and methodological questions relevant to designing for and researching web-based communities to support the learning process. Coming from diverse academic backgrounds, the authors examine what we do and do not know about the processes and practices of designing communities to support educational processes. Taken as a collection, the chapters point to the challenges and complex tensions that emerge when designing for a web-supported community, especially when the focal practice of the community is learning.

As technology progresses and needs for distance learning increase due to globalization, the days of collegiate discussions over a beverage of choice are grinding to a close. However, according to the contributors of these 14 articles, the camaraderie that seems to grow naturally from learning together is possible online. They begin by describing the relationship between a sense of community and learning and progress to describing different approaches to designing a sense of community into online learning experiences, whether as part of the content or in such techniques as electronic forums. They are realistic about the limitations of the technology and the sociocultural forces behind online communities, as well as the possibility that, just as in the case of the aforesaid conversations over beverages, a sense of "we" and "they" is likely to form.
