Book News Annotation:

Having first encountered Immanuel Wallerstein's The Modern World-System while researching the precolonial history of Niumi, a small former kingdom on the banks of the Gambia River, Wright (emeritus, history, State U. of New York) began to consider how the changes experienced by the residents of Niumi over the course of centuries were the result of changes in the world system and the first edition of this work, published in 1994, was the result. With the second edition, published in 2004, he incorporated greater emphasis on processes of globalization beyond the economic focus of world systems theory while simultaneously updating the narrative to account for more recent events. Now, with this third edition, he updates the story once again and, in light of the local oppression generated by the Gambian state under President Yahya Jammeh, reconsiders some of the theoretical emphases of the first two editions.
