The Dot and the Line: A Romance in Lower Mathemetics

The Dot and the Line: A Romance in Lower Mathemetics Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Once upon a time there was a sensible straight line who was hopelessly in love with a beautiful dot. But the dot, though perfect in every way, only had eyes for a wild and unkempt squiggle. All of the line's romantic dreams were in vain, until he discovered . . . angles! Now, with newfound self-expression, he can be anything he wants to be; a square, a triangle, a parallelogram, and that's just the beginning! First published in 1963 and made into an Academy Award-winning animated short film, here is a supremely witty love story with a twist that reveals profound truths about relationships; both human and mathematical. Sure to tickle lovers of all ages.

I have been in love with this story ever since I first saw the cartoon when I was young. I was extremely thrilled when I found out that it was also a book.

I have read this story to generations of children of all ages, and I have given many many copies of the book as 'a special something' to friends and family. I once gave a copy to a friendly stranger on a plane who was taking her first flight ever (at age 77) so she could see her 'brand new' great grandchild; and another copy was given to the police chief when my car broke down in his lovely small town.

I have never known anyone who didn't fall in love with this story. Smiles start to form when they hear or read the opening lines. Everyone loves it.

It is a universal story. Timeless. It always makes me feel good when I read it, and especially when I can share it with someone for their first time.

Thank you so much, Mr. Juster, for sharing this wonderful tale with the world.

I've been familure with The Dot and The Line for over 20 years and I haven't gotten tired of it yet. I'm somewhat of a storyteller and have read this book in front of a huge range of audiences -- 300 college freshman, 20 first graders and 60 fellow employees -- all of them found it funny, facinating and worthy. I've given copies away as wedding gifts and birthday presents. I couldn't give it a higher recommendation.
