Synopses & Reviews

Book News Annotation:

Drawing from a course he has taught since the late 1990s, and on his experience helping coordinate US and European research, Black (emeritus geography, Indiana U.-Bloomington) sets out his own understanding of what sustainable transportation is and could be. He does not go into detail about planning or methodology, but provides pointers for others to take those routes. He begins by explaining the problem, in relations to climate change, urban air quality, the finite nature of petroleum reserves, safety, congestion, and other factors. Then he surveys possible solutions in the areas of pricing, planning, policy, education, and technology. Examples of topics include the full cost of transportation, indicator-based planning, the special role of speed and speed limit policies, and the potential of alternative fuels. Synopsis:

During the last two decades, sustainability has become the dominant concern of transportation planners and policymakers. This timely text provides a framework for developing systems that move people and products efficiently while minimizing damage to the local and global environment. The book offers a uniquely comprehensive perspective on the problems surrounding current transportation systems: climate change, urban air pollution, diminishing petroleum reserves, safety issues, and congestion. It explores the full range of possible solutions, including applications of pricing, planning, policy, education, and technology. Numerous figures, tables, and examples are featured, with a primary focus on North America.
