Happiness, Economics and Politics : Towards a Multi-Disciplinary Approach

Happiness, Economics and Politics : Towards a Multi-Disciplinary Approach Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Book News Annotation:

The editors (both of the U. of Notre Dame) present a multi-disciplinary collection of 16 papers in which scholars from the fields of history, psychology, sociology, economics, and political science address the "science of happiness," which is concerned with understanding happiness through quantifiable and measurable concepts and the empirical and theoretical tools of the social and biological sciences. Because of their own disciplinary predilections, the editors have allowed the fields of political science and economics to be the dominant disciplines represented by the papers, which address such topics as contemporary theories and methodological directions in the measurement of happiness, happiness and the relative consumption hypothesis, inequality and happiness surveys from Latin America, the causal link between happiness and democratic welfare regimes, labor organization and the quality of life in the American states, and the possibilities of pursuing policies for maximizing happiness.
