Anything You Say Can and Will Be Used Against You: Stories Cover

Author's Note

It was just too intense to put into words. So writing these stories allowed me to exorcise demons and come to grips with who I was and the work I did.

Another impetus was to shove aside the romantic notions, the stereotypes, the good and bad guy mentality that many people have about police work and reveal the moral complexity of the job. I wanted to open the door so readers could see beyond the badge and the gun to the human beings underneath with their own personal dramas and losses, hopes and loves. The job is tough, cruel, unrelenting, scary, frequently unappreciated, and it alters the fabric of who a person is for the rest of their life. I remember every murder, every suicide, every traffic fatality, and it colors everything I do. But the job also carries these moments of grace, and through my stories, I could make those visible and appreciate what I did, what so many men and women continue to do.

These stories were written to honor the humanity of police officers and the work they do, without flinching away from the imperfections.
