I first read this when I was in fourth or fifth grade, and as I recall, I found it rather depressing. There were certain images and moments that really stuck with me, though, so after reading Homecoming (the prequel) for the first time, I thought I'd re-read Dicey's Song and see how I felt about it now. I liked it much, much better this time around. Dicey is a wonderfully tough character who nonetheless has a lot of flaws and vulnerabilities that make her extremely likeable. I really identified with her ambiguity about being 13 and starting to look more like a girl/woman. I think if I'd read this book in seventh grade, I would've taken more away from it than I did when I read it in fifth.
