Reading Group Guide

In Robert Cormier's unforgettable novels, an individual often stands alone, fighting for what is right--or just to survive--against powerful, sinister, and sometimes evil people. His twisty, gripping stories explore some of the darker corners of the human psyche but always with a moral focus and a probing intelligence that compels readers to examine their own feelings and ethical beliefs. The questions that follow are intended to spur discussion and to provoke thoughtful readers to contemplate some of the issues of identity, character, emotion, and morality that make Cormier's books so compelling.

From just reading the summary, there's a good chance that I'll like this book. I'm the type of person that rarely gets into depth with a lot of books. It's either amazing or boring, otherwise I'm not even interested in reading it at all. But this book I think I'll very much enjoy and may even read again.

"Staff Pick" by ,

Part mystery and part drama, this young adult classic from the righteous '70s (it was published right after Jimmy Carter took office) is weird, thrilling, surprising, provocative, and sophisticated. But the bicycling scenes are my favorite — long before fancy gears and panniers, our hero Adam treks across New England on a journey to save his life, measuring miles by junk food.

"Review" by , "A horrifying tale of government corruption, espionage, and counter espionage told by an innocent young victim...the buildup of suspense is terrific."
"Synopsis" by , A boy's search for his father becomes a desperate journey to unlock a secret past. But it is a past that must not be remembered...if he is to survive.
