Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Build exciting, scalable web applications quickly and confidently using Google App Engine and this book, even if you have little or no experience in programming or web development.

App Engine is perhaps the most appealing web technology to appear in the last year, providing an easy-to-use application framework with basic web tools. While Google's own tutorial assumes significant experience, Using Google App Engine will help anyone get started with this platform. By the end of this book, you'll know how to build complete, interactive applications and deploy them to the cloud using the same servers that power Google applications.

With this book, you will:

  • Get an overview of the technologies necessary to use Google App Engine
  • Learn how to use Python, HTML, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), HTTP, and DataStore, App Engine's database
  • Grasp the technical aspects necessary to create sophisticated, dynamic web applications
  • Understand what's required to deploy your applications

Using Google App Engine is also an excellent resource for experienced programmers who want to acquire working knowledge of web technologies. Building web applications used to be for experts only, but with Google App Engine-and this book-anyone can create a dynamic web presence.

Book News Annotation:

Google App Engine, free for moderate levels of use, enables anyone's web programs to run in the Google "cloud," the entire scalable Google infrastructure. This text/self-study tutorial teaches even readers with no experience in programming or web development how to build scalable, interactive web applications using Google App Engine. Early chapters provide background on programming on the web, overview the tools necessary to use Google App Engine, including HTML, CSS, and Python, and explain how to send data to an application. Later chapters cover more advanced topics, such as cookies and sessions, Javascript and AJAX, and running the application on the Google cloud. Concepts are demonstrated with an ongoing example of a website with members and multiuser chat. Appendices give instructions for installing and running Google App Engine in Windows XP, Windows Vista, Mac, and Linux. The book can be used for self-study for beginners and as a resource for experienced programmers. It can also used for a semester-long introduction to web programming course, for students in high school and up. Reusable classroom materials are available on the author's web site. Severance teaches in the School of Information at the University of Michigan. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
