Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

The Narrative chronicles a journey of discovery by the first trained naturalist to cross the American continent. Townsend's account of his trek along what would soon become the Oregon Trail is a classic of western exploration and scientific discovery.

Book News Annotation:

The title page shows the complete title as: Townsend was a brilliant young ornithologist invited to join Captain Nathaniel Wyeth's 1834 expedition to the Oregon country. This account (restored here to its entirety) includes engaging descriptions of his travels as well as his original scientific appendix of bird and mammal life. The narrative was originally published in 1839 (H. Perkins, Philadelphia); here it is introduced and annotated by George A. Jobanek, who sets Townsend's accomplishments as a scientific explorer in context.
