Although One Hundred Years of Solitude is widely considered to be Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s masterpiece, Chronicle of a Death Foretold is a particularly skillfully crafted novel. From the moment we know how and where Santiago Nasar dies at the beginning of the novel, it is impossible not to want to know the rest of the story – how could an entire town know that a man is about to be ruthlessly murdered without making a move to prevent his death? The moral questions are there, but so is Garcia Marquez’s mesmerizing and gripping storytelling, filled with visceral detail.

"Review" by , "Exquisitely harrowing...very strange and brilliantly conceived...a sort of metaphysical murder mystery."
"Review" by , "This investigation of an ancient murder takes on the quality of a hallucinatory exploration, a deep, groping search into the gathering darkness of human intentions for a truth that continually slithers away."
"Review" by , "As pungent and memorable as a sharp spice, an examination of the nature of complicity and fate...an exquisite performance."
"Review" by , "A writer of supernal gifts....It is always a pleasure to be transported to Garcia Márquez's remote and mystical region, to spend a few hours in the grip of an enchanting storyteller."
"Review" by , "Richly sardonic....One could not find more vivid caricature of that lethal blend of machismo, braggadocio, and hypertrophic sense of honor that sullies South American society."
"Review" by , "Brilliant....A small masterpiece...we can almost see, smell and hear Garcia Marquez's Caribbean backwater and its inhabitants."
