Not Your Fathers Antisemitism: Hatred of the Jews in the 21st Century

Not Your Fathers Antisemitism: Hatred of the Jews in the 21st Century Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

In sixteen crisp essays written by distinguished scholars from diverse disciplines, backgrounds and countries, Not Your Father's Antisemitism argues that contemporary hatred of the Jews is not a throwback to the 1930s but a unique manifestation of 21st century humanity and the post-modernist crisis. The work examines antisemitism in contemporary Europe; in classical and contemporary Islam; it follows the migration of discredited myths from the Christian West to Islam, namely the Protocols of the Elders of Zion and Holocaust Denial; it argues for American exceptionalism - namely, that the problem of antisemitism in the contemporary US is less acute that many would maintain - even as explores antisemitism on the right and the left in the United States today, and, finally, it examines the impact of Isr'l both in quelling the flames and fueling the fires of contemporary antisemitism.

Book News Annotation:

After World War II and the foundation of Israel, many people hoped that wide-spread anti-Semitism would vanish. Papers delivered at a recent conference indicate that it has simply mutated. The editor of this report, Berenbaum is a Holocaust scholar and professor of Jewish studies at the American Jewish University, where the conference was held. The book is divided into seven sections. Three papers focus on France, which has a large and ancient Jewish population. Others note how anti-Semitism has become intertwined with anti-American feelings. Several papers on Islam trace historical roots of hatred of the Jews and note that it is only recently that the prejudice has become virulent. Myths about Jew that are largely discounted in the west have become popular in Muslim countries. The case of America is different: two articles point out that Jews perceive more anti- Semitism than actually exists. The use of anti-Semitism by both far right and far left groups is often a response to Israel. The authors are of Jewish, Christian, and Muslim backgrounds. This important book raises questions about the state of intolerance in the world and also gives suggestions for combating it. It does suffer from poor copyediting, with words misplaced and many typos. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
