This comprehensive collection of timeless and powerful stories puts the wisdom of world religions in the hands of young readers.

When attempting to find a simple, engaging, and unbiased approach to world religions for her own family, Marilyn McFarlane discovered such a book did not exist. Understanding how important it is for children to build both respect for and knowledge of a variety of religions, regardless of their own faith, McFarlane created Sacred Stories: Wisdom from World Religions.

Each captivating story and accompanying sidebar facts and spot illustrations brings to life the key tenets of a particular belief system, while the comprehensive glossary and resource list enable readers to expand their explorations. Including easy-to-understand descriptions and essential stories from Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Native American, and Sacred Earth, Sacred Stories is perfect for parents and teachers who want to expand young readers' understanding of world traditions.

The simple, informative, unbiased language of Sacred Stories, combined with its comprehensive resource list and glossary, makes it an ideal learning tool for teachers, librarians, and other educators.

About the Author

Marilyn McFarlane, raised in a devoutly religious family, always had an interest in the diversity of world faiths. During her journeys as an author and travel writer, Marilyn continued her education by exploring sacred sites — Hindu temples in India, European cathedrals, Buddhist shrines, neo-Pagan altars, mosques in Morocco, and many more.

With the firm belief that understanding others' faiths can lead to tolerance, acceptance, and peace, and an equally firm belief in the power of story, Marilyn wrote Sacred Stories. A mother and grandmother, she lives in Portland, Oregon, with her husband, two cats, and many books.

This book is an essential guide to the major world religions for children and adults alike. In our complex time, it provides a beautiful glimpse into the stories that make any religion alive. I was moved by the dawning comprehension that the Golden Rule exists in each chapter--wonderful! How best to learn something so simple, yet so profound? Stories! The author uses these stories to go to deep places without scaring anyone--before you know it, you realize how similar we all are in our quest for a life with meaning. Along with the educational guide that the author has provided, this is a perfect book to read to children, especially since most of us have forgotten these treasures long ago.

I have been reading this wonderful book to my grandchildren aged 6 and 10. They are enthralled, and I am too. The sacred stories are simply told, but full of insight and wisdom. Great reading for adults and bright, curious children.
