Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

From sinfully delicious Boston cream pie to mouthwatering herb focaccia, here's every luscious recipe a baker could want--all triple-tested by Good Housekeeping for guaranteed success, the first time and every time.

More than 600 sweet and savory Good Housekeeping recipes, all shown in beautiful color photos, fill the pages of this home baker's must-have. These are the treats that bring back memories and create new ones for generations to come. They range from classic childhood favorites (moist and scrumptious brownies) to more unfamiliar delights like Oatmeal Quick Bread and tempting specialties such as elegant French fruit tarts. Of course, all the baking basics are here including useful information about: appliances from bread machines to immersion blenders; baking pans, sheets, and dishes that work best; plus the right ingredients and flavorings to have on hand. The book also features step-by-step techniques for each baking category. To please the nutrition-conscious cook, every cookie, cracker, soufflé, custard, pie, tart, and cake comes with a calorie count and key information on proteins, carbohydrates, fat, fiber, cholesterol, and sodium.

Synopsis:

More than 600 sweet and savory recipes, all shown in beautiful color photos and with the Good Housekeeping imprimatur, fill the pages of this home baker's must-have. It's so easy to make the most humdrum day sparkle with these triple-tested, fresh-from-the-oven delights. Memories are made with traditional treats like sugar cookies or fudgy brownies. For something new, try a silky custard pie or big-city cheesecake. Make scrumptious souffles (yes, you can!), pizzas and quiches, or international specialties such as Italian and Greek breads, elegant French fruit tarts, or buttery Danish pastries. All the baking basics are included, along with enough helpful hints to get it right the first time and every time after.

(For us Brits) Even though the weights are american weights and measures in this fantastic baking book! Just buy a set of cups (1/4 up to 1 cup measures, under £5 at John Lewis),or if you have a bread machine use the ones you get with that, remember that a stick of butter is 4oz/113grams, and you're away! This book not only delivers inspiring and easy to follow recipes but also gives calorie and fat contents for each recipe as well as ideas for varying each recipe to suit all tastes. Grandmother's oatmeal-raisin cookies are particularly delicious as is the marmalade cake. With 600 recipes to choose from this book is essential for any baking fanatic.
