Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

The frame "find, " that rare antique unearthed in grandmother's attic, is almost a thing of the past as an increasing number of people have begun collecting frames. They see in them their high craftsmanship and relationship to art history, museums in recent years have responded to this growing interest in the housing for art with important exhibitions. Tim Newberry writes: "Every painting was made within a context and the frame which surrounded it was part of this environment. The original purpose, setting and lighting have usually changed, often leaving the frame as the principal means of presentation today. A study of frames can reveal changing attitudes towards paintings, for example, as they became decorative rather than devotional objects."

Synopsis:

Increasingly, picture frames are collected in thei r own right, viewed for the significant role they have played in art history. Museums exhibit them. Here are frames from the 14th to the 19th century from throughout Europe.
