Tokyo from Edo to Showa 1867-1989: The Emergence of the World's Greatest City (Tuttle Classics)by Edward Seidensticker
Synopses & ReviewsPublisher Comments:Edward Seidensticker's Tokyo: From Edo to Showa, available here for the first time in a single volume, tells the story of Tokyo's transformation from the Shogun's capital in an isolated Japan to one of the most renowned modern cities in the world. With the same scholarship and style that won him admiration as one of the premier translators of Japanese literature, he offers the reader his own brilliant picture of a whole society suddenly emerging into the modern world. By turns elegiac and funny, reflective and crisp, Tokyo: From Edo to Showa is an important cultural history of Asia's greatest city.
Book News Annotation:The books reprinted in this volume--Low City, High City and Tokyo Rising-- together make up one of the best social and cultural histories of modern Tokyo in the English language. With a great eye for detail, Seidensticker follows the development of Tokyo from the years of great social and technological change that followed the end of the Shogun Era, through the disruptions resulting from the great earthquake and fire of 1923 and the Second World War, up to the boom years of the 1980s. Exceedingly well written and full of interesting stories, this book is a must for anyone interested in Japan and its history. Includes numerous illustrations, including 16 pages in full color.
