Publisher Comments:

The enthralling debut from bestselling novelistMichael Chabon is a penetrating narrative of complexfriendships, father-son conflicts, and the awakening of a young mans sexualidentity. Chabon masterfully renders the funny, tender, and captivating first-person narrative of Art Bechstein, whose confusion and heartache echo the tones of literary forebears like The Catcher in the Ryes HoldenCaulfield and The Great Gatsbys NickCarraway. TheMysteries of Pittsburgh incontrovertibly established Chabonas a powerful force in contemporary fiction, even before his PulitzerPrize-winning novel The AmazingAdventures of Kavalier & Clay set theliterary world spinning. An unforgettable story of coming of age in America, itis also an essential milestone in the movement of American fiction, from anovelist who has become one of the most important and enduring voices of thisgeneration.

Synopsis:

The sheltered son of a Jewish mobster, Art Bechstein leaps into his first summer as a college graduate as cluelessly as he capered through his school years. But new friends and lovers are eager to guide him through these sultry days of last-ditch youthful alienation and sexual confusion—in a blue-collar city where the mundane can sometimes appear almost magical.

Michael Chabon's first novel is very funny and bittersweet. Every one of the characters is fully drawn and developed. Using Pittsburgh as the setting of the novel enhances the novel's freshness and originality. This is a book you'll savor over and over again.

As someone who lived where this book is set and was there during the time the book describes I can say with confidence that Michael Chabon took Pittsburgh dross and made it into pure literary gold. Thanks, Michael, for doing something so wonderful with my hometown. It took the right author to see the artistic potential in Pittsburgh and himself. Bravo!
