Lord John is an intriguing character. Diana Gabaldon's Lord John not only is a solider at a time when to be gay is a punishable offense resulting in death, but a man who solves mysteries as well. How Lord John navigates through is world as a solider and the son of a "disgraced" duke is worth reading. As a historical novel, the research is excellent but doesn't interfere with the story. I highly recommend this book.
