Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

This fast-paced action novel is set in a future where the world has been almost destroyed. Like the award-winning novel Freak the Mighty, this is Philbrick at his very best.

It's the story of an epileptic teenager nicknamed Spaz, who begins the heroic fight to bring human intelligence back to the planet. In a world where most people are plugged into brain-drain entertainment systems, Spaz is the rare human being who can see life as it really is. When he meets an old man called Ryter, he begins to learn about Earth and its past. With Ryter as his companion, Spaz sets off an unlikely quest to save his dying sister — and in the process, perhaps the world.

His more recent books for the Blue Sky Press are REM World; The Last Book in the Universe, which was named an ALA Best Book for Young Adults; and The Young Man and the Sea, which received a starred review from School Library Journal. This book is an exceptional piece of writing. As a middle school English teacher I have read many young adult novels and I have to say this is one that I couldn't put down. I read it in one sitting. I am not particularly a fan of science fiction but I couldn't put this book down. My 13-year-old nephew said it's the best book he's ever read. It's a little dark for some readers so when buying for children you might want to preview it first. Adolescent girls tended to be less enthralled than the boys--but many still enjoyed it.
