Publisher Comments:

David Abram draws on sources as diverse as the philosophy of Merleau-Ponty, Balinese shamanism, Apache storytelling, and his own experience as an accomplished sleight-of-hand magician to reveal the subtle dependence of human cognition on the natural environment. He explores the character of perception and excavates the sensual foundations of language, which--even at its most abstract--echoes the calls and cries of the earth. On every page of this lyrical work, Abram weaves his arguments with passion and intellectual daring.

"Long awaited, revolutionary...This book ponders the violent disconnection of the body from the natural world and what this means about how we live and die in it."--Los Angeles Times

Beautifully written and insightful. Abram's book explores the ways in which most cultures and their people have divorced themselves from their true connection with the natural world as well as ways in which we can re-connect to a deeper understanding of who we are and where we belong.

I wish I was an elegant writer like David Abram who speaks not to your cognitive mind as much as your sensing physical self which has its own way of knowing. This book gave words, images, and embodied thought towards my experience of "worlding". The world is a verb and he reminds you with every page. This is the book I hand to anyone who even glances at my bookcase and I tell them to keep it.

This is a very thorough, well-researched and well-documented book on the connection between the development of language and the demise of man's connection with the natural world. It's the most thought-provoking thing I've read in a long time.
