McKay invites readers into the highly affectionate but incredibly chaotic daily dramas of the Casson family. Engaging, clever characters explore topics ranging from adoption to tomato sandwiches — in other words, life's essential stuff. Profound, hilarious, and completely satisfying.

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

The four Casson children, whose mother, Eve, is a fine-arts painter, have all been given the names of paint colors. Cadmium (Caddy), is the eldest; then Saffron (Saffy); Indigo, the only boy; and Rose, the youngest. When Saffy discovers quite by accident that she has been adopted, she is deeply upset, though the others assure her that it makes no difference at all. Saffy is the daughter of Eve's twin sister, who lived in Siena, Italy, and died in a car crash. Grandad brought Saffy, as a very small child, back from Siena. andlt;BRandgt; At Grandad's death he leaves something to each of the children. To Saffy, it is "her angel," although no one knows its identity. How Saffy discovers what her angel is, with the help of an energetic new friend, lies at the heart of this enchanting story. Unforgettable characters come alive in often deeply humorous and always absorbing events to be treasured for a long, long time.

If you look at the color chart you will find many beautiful colors-cadmium yellow, permanent rose, indigo blue, but no matter how hard you look you wont find a Saffron. In the Casson house the color chart does not end at just the things that paint the world, but they value these shades so much that every one of their children is named after a color on the chart. Except ofcourse Saffron. So... why it's because maybe mommy isn't your mommy. When Saffron discovers this she starts to wonder. Her now ill grandfather is the only one who knows anything, and then of course he dies. In his will all the other children got a fair share but Saffy gets "Her angel in the garden" and that is were the adventure starts. I really enjoyed this story. It had a strong theme- You don't have to be related to your family. I would suggest this book to any age of reader because it is fast paced and and an easy read.It was worth the read and had a full-filling ending, and if you want more on the Cassons there are many prequels, focusing in on each child Rose, Indigo, and Cadmium. So in your family are you that one, that one that is special, different? Are you Saffron?

There is something about Hilary McKay's books that make me incredibly happy. Exploring the life of a daft, loving, funny family, McKay treats heavy subjects -- in this case adoption and belonging -- with humor and grace. Read it: you might just fall in love with the Casson family, too.
