Publisher Comments:

Robyn OBrien is not the most likely candidate for an antiestablishment crusade. A Houston native from a conservative family, this MBA and married mother of four was not someone who gave much thought to misguided government agencies and chemicals in our food—until the day her youngest daughter had a violent allergic reaction to eggs, and everything changed. The Unhealthy Truth is both the story of how one brave woman chose to take on the system and a call to action that shows how each of us can do our part and keep our own families safe.

OBrien turns to accredited research conducted in Europe that confirms the toxicity of Americas food supply, and traces the relationship between Big Food and Big Money that has ensured that the United States is one of the only developed countries in the world to allow hidden toxins in our food—toxins that can be blamed for the alarming recent increases in allergies, ADHD, cancer, and asthma among our children. Featuring recipes and an action plan for weaning your family off dangerous chemicals one step at a time The Unhealthy Truth is a must-read for every parent—and for every concerned citizen—in America today.

Synopsis:

Tracing the relationship between Big Food and Big Money, O'Brien maintains that the United States allows hidden toxins in its food--toxins that can be blamed for the alarming recent increases in allergies, ADHD, cancer, and asthma.

I read this book as a new mom. I was just learning about the issues of plastics and other chemical in our environment and this fit that vein as the author delves into the issues of genetically modified foods in our diet. they are ubiquitous. she shares both her journey and the information she learns about the relationships of the food industry, lobby groups, and the FDA. More than a little scary to learn how our government really works. Ironically I've always been someone who didn't hold our government in very high regard, but what I've learned in this book and others relating the government's role in maintaining toxins in our environment to appease big business has truly hit me hard. As a new mom with an outside job, I'm exhausted already and trying to do everything i can to raise my daughter well and create a safe environment for her. But to then realize I have to police EVERYTHING - it's overwhelming. However, back to book, it's very clearly written and the message is very important. I very highly recommend anyone concerned about their long term health or that of their children read this book. I gave it only 4 stars because the writing style was a little annoying - I felt that she was 'writing down' to the reader at times, constantly repeating herself as if I didn't understand the first time. That got old fast. But, perhaps she was writing for a less educated audience? In any case, this is an important book and I recommend you read it.
