Poetry Slam: The Competitive Art of Performance Poetry Cover

One of the really cool elements about this thorough collection of slam celebrities are the many sidebar articles about the logistics and history of the slam. These articles include tips on how to memorize your work, how to do your own spoken word tour, how to compose a group piece, and many other helpful hints. Editor Gary Glazner is a wild man and his choices of work are eccentric and electric. You got Gayle Danley's "Funeral Like Nixon", where she sarcastically explains how she'd "want to die like a white man." There's the rapid fire poetics of DJ Renegade. There's the culinary hilarity of Justin Chin's "Chinese Restaurant" poem. And Portland's even represented (by Carl Hanni and Ritah Parrish). A fine document on this ever-evolving cultural phenomenon.
