Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

30 Days of Night collects all three issues of Steve Niles's blood-curdling tale of vampires running amok in the arctic in one handsome volume. Niles's gripping tale, vividly brought to life through the evocative artwork of Ben Templesmith, details the unfortunate town of Barrow, Alaska, whose month-long winter darkness provides a siren call to a band of bloodthirsty vampires. The townspeople's only hope of survival lies in the hand of Stella and Eben, the local husband-and-wife sheriff team. This 30 Days of Night collection features additional story pages not included in the original releases, as well as an introduction by acclaimed horror scribe Cliver Barker.

Review:

"The comic in your hands has much of the raw, even brutal energy of a horror movie from the good old days. Short, sharp, and unforgiving. It's got a catchy title, a wonderfully clever but simple idea at its chilly heart, and a narrative that starts at a run and never slows down." Clive Barker, from his Introduction

Review:

"Not for the fainthearted, this novel in graphic format pushes boundaries and buttons and propels its author into the limelight with the power of its brutal vision." Angelina Benedetti, VOYA

Review:

"Writer Steve Niles plays on common fears of isolation, darkness, and monsters in a story that's more chilling than its locale. A good writer could extrapolate any one of these fears into a thrilling story. But Niles succeeds in pushing all of these buttons with the right frequency to produce a story that's not just chilling, but downright scary." Jim Johnson, Comics Buyers Guider (The A-List)

Review:

"Above all else, 30 Days of Night reads like a horror movie — a great horror movie. If you thirsty for something that's guaranteed to scare the pants off you, you've gotta pick this up. But take my advice — read it with the lights on." Casey Seijas, Wizard Magazine (Best of the Best 2002 — Breakout Event of the Year)

Synopsis:

This is the story of an isolated Alaskan town that is plunged into darkness for a month each year when the sun sinks below the horizon. As the last rays of light fade, the town is attacked by a bloodthirsty gang of vampires bent on an uninterrupted orgy of destruction. Only the small town's husband-and-wife Sheriff team stand between the survivors and certain destruction.

Synopsis:

In a sleepy, secluded Alaska town called Barrow, the sun sets and doesn't rise for over thirty consecutive days and nights. From the darkness, across the frozen wasteland, an evil will come that will bring the residents of Barrow to their knees. The only hope for the town is the Sheriff and Deputy, husband and wife who are torn between their own survival and saving the town they love.

I thought this was a great idea for a vampire tale, and I found the artwork stunning and evocative. The actual execution of the plot, however, left something to be desired -- none of the characters were really more than two-dimensional, and overall the whole book felt too short.

A graphic novel that is strong on the graphic. Like a lot of good horror stories, the intense and violent "30 Days of Night" has a simple, but clever premise: a brood of vampires descends on a tiny, out of the way Alaskan town that is in darkness for an entire month. Much mayhem ensues. There will be blood! The artwork is terrific. Also a major motion picture!
