About the AuthorDr. Edmiston is a specialist in eighteenth-century French literature. His first book was a study of DIDEROT AND THE FAMILY (Stanford French and Italian Studies, Anma Libri, 1985). In subsequent years he worked on structuralist narratology, and in 1991 he published HINDSIGHT AND INSIGHT: FOCALIZATION IN FOUR EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY FRENCH NOVELS (Penn State Press). In 1991 he received a grant to attend a seminar at the Folger Institute entitled "Sexuality, the Family, and Republican Politics in Late Eighteenth-Century France," and since that time his work has focused on issues of gender and sexuality in French novels of the late eighteenth century. In 1995 he received a grant from the French Cultural Services to produce a series of videotapes for a distance education course on contemporary French culture. Dr. Edmiston regularly teaches a 500-level course on contemporary France, which is open to both graduate and undergraduate students. Dr. Dumenil's primary research and teaching interests are French linguistics (phonetics and phonology), pedagogy, and basic and intermediate French. At the graduate level, she teaches, trains, and supervises graduate-teaching assistants in French. At the undergraduate level, Dr. Dumenil functions as the basic course director and oversees the ongoing development of the proficiency-based French curriculum. She has published articles on French phonology and co-authored two textbooks, one on Intermediate French and the other on French culture and civilization.
