Snacking is an American way of life. This accessible, full-color guide to the best-tasting natural and organic "junk" is filled with nutrition information and tips for finding healthy snacks.

An accessible, full-color guide to the best-tasting natural and organic "junk" food — filled with nutrition info and tips for finding healthy snacks.

Snacking is an American way of life: in a given year, 97 percent of people buy candy and chocolate, 96 percent buy soda and purchase chips, and 89 percent eat ice cream. Now, the creators of NaturallySavvy.com have created a fun, easy-to-use reference guide to eating "healthier" snacks and natural foods free from artificial ingredients, preservatives, food colorings, trans-fats, and toxic food additives.

Each chapter focuses on a different type of junk food (i.e. ice cream or cookies), making it easy for readers to quickly locate the foods they're craving, and includes a list of specific ingredients to avoid in each category. Offering a side-by-side comparison of natural/organic product recommendations against popular conventional brands, the authors reveal some of the craftiest and misleading labeling tricks including confusing serving sizes and advertised health benefits. Complete with pictures and helpful icons, Unjunk Your Junk Food belongs in everyone's shopping cart while navigating the aisles at the supermarket.

Review:

"So, your diet went well the first week of the new year. Maybe the second. But now, tempting snacks are starting to tempt. Pick up this little book by three "health and wellness advocates" whose website, NaturallySavvy.com, promotes organic living. Reasons why you crave certain snacks — low blood sugar for cookies, low iron for salt — are among things you'll learn in this highly informative guide." Newsday

This book is very easy to read and is visually appealing in presenting good-vs-bad options. We think of ourselves as avid label-readers. When shopping for new foods, we scan the ingredients to see if there are any trans fats, high fructose corn syrup, or other scary items on the list. If so, the box/can/package goes back on the shelf. This is the same approach taken by the authors of Unjunk Your Junk Food. The book includes a tear-out 'Worst Ingredients' chart that you can bring to the grocery store. I used the chart and looked through my pantry"several items had indeed made it past my initial screening, because I found plenty of items with artificial flavors and artificial colors and preservatives in them. Thanks to this book, I will be more vigilant on our shopping trips. It helped me decipher some of the more ambiguous ingredients.
