Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Filled with ideas for how to liven up your life, How to Play the Harmonica is the perfect companion for keeping you happy.

Lost your dog?
Call him home with a shrill whistle on your harmonica.

Bored at work?
Impress your colleagues with your witty banter and new thoughts on life.

Tired of cooking?
Throw in the apron and head out for Chinese...in Beijing.

With the harmonica as his guide, Sam Barry leads the way to higher sense of self and fun.

As a former minister, reporter, activist, bohemian, writer and artist, Sam Barry knows a great many things about life-and playing the harmonica. Barry currently works as a marketing and promotions manager at HarperOne and plays the harmonica in The Rock Bottom Remainders with his brother Dave. He and his partner, Kathi Kamen Goldmark, live in San Francisco.

Witty ways for putting some fun back into your funny bone.

Review:

"In this little gem of a book, Barry's pastorly reassurances loosen ties, bring out inner chickens and enable nascent musicians to let rip like Dylan and the Boss, eventually moving toward pomposity-slaying licks and writing an original blues song (because you know you have one in you)." BookPage

Review:

"We should all stop and smell the roses, but as Sam Barry notes in this cheery and inspiring little book, stopping to make a little music is just as rewarding and much more fun — and you can do it indoors! A wonderful read." Mitch Albom, author of For One More Day

Review:

"Thanks to this book I have lost twenty pounds, remembered where I left my car keys in l986, and, no, I have not yet mastered the mouth harp, but I no longer hum tunelessly, which has saved my marriage." Roy Blount Jr., author of Alphabet Juice

Review:

"How to Play the Harmonica: and Other Life Lessons captures the soul of great harp players like Little Walter, tosses in a dash of Will Farrell's antics, and serves it up for readers everywhere to enjoy." James McBride, author of Song Yet Sung
