In all, 414 people entered our name-the-squirrel contest. Some submitted only a name, but most included stories to support their choices (including a colorful, fake Wikipedia entry).
Why Morrison? Do you really have to ask?
Okay. Because we liked it. Hah!
In fact, the guy who designed the squirrel image — that'd be Trent — winnowed 414 entries to a dozen. I trimmed his list down to four. And finally the folks here voted.
Nancy, our winner, who claims the $100 prize, had supplied this explanation with her submission:
After spending every day of the first 18 years of my life waiting for the school bus in the rain (or so it seemed), I left Portland 47 years ago. But the city is part of who I am, and I visit family there often. The Morrison Street bridge was my favorite of all Portland's bridges, so I selected the name Morrison for the squirrel.
Look, it's not my favorite bridge — that'd be the Hawthorne, or maybe St. John's — but Morrison is one heck of a name for a Portland squirrel. We interviewed hundreds of squirrels this week. Every single one was angry that we woke them up in the middle of winter, but grumpy, groggy rodents agree: He does kinda look like a Morrison. ("And anyway," they said, "who are you to decide which bridge is best?")
Wait, have you not heard about the squirrel? (And yet you've read to this point in the post. Strange.) The squirrel was big news. He sure looks handsome on our reusable bags, yes? But also he does chin-ups. Seriously. Okay, never mind, he's done showing off. Or maybe not done.
Congratulations, Nancy. And thanks to everyone who entered.

He'll always be Sir Giggles Wigglebottom to me!!
Let the nicknames begin! Morrie, Sonny...Jim?
Morrison is a good, distinguished name for a squirrel.
I like it, especially after hearing from Nancy. Morrison fits.
Might I suggest a middle name...
Oxford. :)
Thanks for the linky to my "colorful" entry, Dave. :)
Much appreciated. I actually liked Morrison when I read the entry. I also liked Pearl.
Any chance of divulging the short list?
Yah, I think Morrison does fit quite nicely! For some reason Morrison makes me think of brown squirrel! lol Oh, except for when it is combined with Toni...then I just think of good writing!
Long Live Morrison!
Are there any trees near the Morrison bridge? Maybe that is where he lives??? Wait, is Morrison a boy or a girl or is s/he transitioning???
