Patton Oswalt Visits the City of Books and Says….

Last Saturday we were fortunate enough to have Patton Oswalt visit our flagship store on Burnside. Oswalt is the author of Zombie Spaceship Wasteland, an inventive account of the evolution of his wildly insightful worldview, sure to indulge his legion of fans and lure many new admirers to his very entertaining wasteland.

A highly entertaining comedian and talented actor, we were thrilled to welcome him to the store, and, as you might imagine, hilarity ensued, exacerbated by large, fake hams.

And now, we'd like to introduce some hilarity of our own — Caption Contest! We can't promise fabulous prizes or international acclaim such as the sort that Mr. Patton likely enjoys, but we can promise that your caption will be published!! Right here on the blog. So there will at least be local acclaim.

Patton Oswalt is a funny guy, at least that's what they tell us. And there is some documented proof of that floating around out there. The photos below are from his visit to our store, and we're betting he was being funny there, too. Sadly, there

Michele Norris Giveaway

[Update, 9.22.10: We're pleased to announce the winner, selected by our staff: Julie Lueker from Portland! We hope she and her husband will enjoy their free tickets to Michele Norris's reading while sitting next to each (but not in their respective vehicles). Thanks to everyone who entered!]

Michele Norris, the host of National Public Radio's All Things Considered and author of the new memoir The Grace of Silence, is reading at the Bagdad Theater in Portland on October 5th. Tickets are $24.95, which includes admission and a copy of her book.

But don't worry — we've got a pair of tickets to give away!

In the wake of talk of a "post-racial America" upon the ascendance of Barack Obama as president of the United States, Michele Norris...set out, through original reporting, to write a book about "the hidden conversation on race" that is going on in this country. But along the way she unearthed painful family secrets — from her father’s shooting by the Birmingham police within weeks of his discharge from service in World

“Mockingjay” Midnight Release Party

Very early this past Tuesday morning, throngs of young readers filled more than two and a half city blocks in downtown Portland to be the first to get their copies of Suzanne Collins's Mockingjay, the third and final book in her acclaimed, bestselling Hunger Games trilogy.

As the New York Times noted:

It is not "Harry Potter" or "Twilight," but there are echoes of those phenomena in the reception of "Mockingjay," the final volume of Suzanne Collins's "Hunger Games" books, a trilogy of dystopian young-adult novels.

[...] At Powell's Books in Portland, Ore., managers have ordered 3,600 copies of "Mockingjay," a supply they hope will last about three weeks. Gerry Donaghy, the new-book purchasing supervisor at Powell's, said he expected the book would be right behind the Stieg Larsson "Millennium" series in sales for the year.

Check out our photos from the midnight release party below — and click here to see even more!

In addition, local children's author Lisa Schroeder has her own pics from the party, where she dressed up as Katniss!

At various points in the evening, the line stretched all the way around Powell's flagship Burnside store — an entire city block!

The Powell's staff were ready and in costume.

Win Scott Pilgrim’s Odds & Ends (and Stickers)!

Scott Pilgrim's Finest Hour, the sixth and final volume in Bryan Lee O'Malley's brilliant and hilarious graphic novel series, has just been published. This week the feature film adaptation Scott Pilgrim vs. the World smashes into theaters.

Could anything make us more Scott Pilgrim-crazy?

Yes: stickers. And also Scott Pilgrim — Full Colour Odds & Ends 2008, a collection of short stories and color pieces that O'Malley has created over the last few years. Originally printed for the 2008 San Diego Comic Con, the book is being published by Oni Press on August 12th.

But you can win one of two free copies (and did I mention stickers?) from! You don't have to fight seven evil ex-boyfriends, either. Just leave a comment below informing us how many evil exes you have. (We don't need details, just a number. Unless you want to share...)

Hurry! The contest ends on 11:59 pm PST Thursday, August 12, 2010. We will randomly select two lucky winners who will be notified via email (so make sure you include your actual email address ...

The Pioneer Woman Event at Powell’s

On April 19th, we had the great pleasure of introducing Ree Drummond to an overwhelming crowd of about 600 fans at Cedar Hills Crossing!

Hours before the event, a line for tickets was wrapped halfway around the store. Ree talked a bit about the surprising and phenomenal success of her blog, briefly answered questions, then signed, signed, signed copies of her new book, The Pioneer Woman Cooks: Recipes from an Accidental Country Girl. She was tremendously gracious, sweet, and accommodating with each and every doting admirer. I honestly think almost every single person who attended stayed to meet her and get a signed copy and pose with her for a picture. Five and a half hours later the line drew to a close and the last fan left.

Powell's is no stranger to green initiatives , if you'll allow us to toot our own horn for a moment. In 2008 we mounted solar panels on our warehouse — 100 kilowatts worth, one of the biggest installations in Oregon. Our delivery trucks run on biodiesel, and since 2007 we've purchased clean wind power, offsetting 165,000 pounds of CO2 each year. Employees even get subsidies for alternative transportation in the form of discounted public transit passes and an annual bicycle maintenance credit.

But one could argue that our biggest contribution to the environment is something we do all the time, with little fanfare, for the last 39 years — buying and selling used books. Did you know that we sell enough used books every day to save half an acre of trees? And, every year, that acreage adds up to enough greenery to provide oxygen ...
