Read It Before They Screen It: Haunted and Freaks of the Heartland

Portland author Chuck Palahniuk will get to see another one of his books make it to the big screen.

Haunted revolves around a group of characters who answer an ad for a writers retreat and unwittingly end up competing in a "Survivor"-like scenario, where the host withholds heat, power and food. As the storytellers grow more desperate they ruthlessly plot to make themselves the hero of the reality show or film that they expect will be made from their plight.

"For those of a particularly iron-clad constitution, not to mention a macabre inclination, Haunted is utterly irresistible," promises's Bolton.

Director David Gordon Green (All the Real Girls, Snow Angels) is in talks to adapt Freaks of the Heartland by graphic novelist Steve Niles.

From The Hollywood Reporter:

Illustrated by Greg Ruth, Niles' six-part 2004 series about the horrible secret of a rural Middle American town involves Trevor Owen's attempts to protect his "monster" of a 6-year-old younger brother and Gristlewood Valley's other "freaks" from their parents' worst instincts.

"The weirdest part of this book is that you wind up feeling for it," declares Comics Bulletin. "If you've been taken in ever so slightly by the lush visuals or the way the words wrap around the image they're laid down on, you'll feel for this book too."
