Our 15th Birthday Bash

We don't know about you, but we're wiped out. Fifteen-day parties aren't for the faint of heart, but your stamina and enthusiasm was truly something to behold! You've done this before. We can tell.

So, who won the $1,500 prize, you're wondering? A hearty congratulations goes to Ivy from Gresham, Oregon! Next time you see Ivy, give her a spirited high five. And if you're one of her loved ones, expect a pretty awesome literary gift this holiday season. (Just a hunch.)

Congrats also to our daily prize winners!birthday hat!

  • October 15: $50 Powells.com credit went to a reader from Maine
  • October 16: Six months of free shipping was awarded to Carla from Toronto (our only international winner)
  • October 17: Six picks from Daily Dose went to Liz of Ames, Iowa
  • October 19: $50 Powells.com credit went to Heather from Coralville, Iowa (Two Iowans! Who knew we were so popular in the heartland?)

Now, if you're like us, you aren't quite ready to let go. Keep the magic alive! Revisit our 15 Things — a compilation of the ways Powells.com is distinctly Powells.com. We'd love to hear about your favorites, or which surprised you, so go ahead and leave a comment here.

Heck, let's give away more stuff! If you leave a comment on this post (by end of day Tuesday, November 10) about one of our 15 Things you'll be entered into a random drawing to win a Powells.com T-shirt of your choice and a $15 gift card. (We're not mathematicians, but, if you're bitter about missing out on the big award, it's safe to say, your chances of winning this time are pretty darn favorable.)

Sincere thanks for being part of the festivities. In the end, it was really a celebration of you — our loyal fans. And, we're more than okay with that.

I love the Used Book Alert idea! That's great!

  2.
    Michelle November 6th, 2009 at 1:04 pm

I love love love the Powell's souvenirs! The design work is always nifty. Best of all, it's so obviously Oregonian! I love that since I'm a northwesterner stuck in the upper Midwest. The Powell's souvenirs are a great way to show some hometown pride out here.

ARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGG! I just learned about this today!! I am bummed about missing my 15 chances... but that mystery box of books sounded cool.. so did the signed first editions and the gift cards... they all sounded good. Pick me, please please please pick me :)

  4.
    Shannon November 6th, 2009 at 1:07 pm

I love the Daily Dose. I have discovered great books and new authors thanks to the recommendations of other readers.

  5.
    Jenna November 6th, 2009 at 1:14 pm

Used books - the very best of recycling, done by the very best of bookstores! Plus it helps this bookworm satisfy her urge to buy books without spending a gazillion dollars a year (which I would, on books, if I bought them all new - "gazillion" is a technical term.)!!

  6.
    Megan November 6th, 2009 at 1:14 pm

I can't decide between used books and free shipping. Both so awesome!!

  7.
    Sean November 6th, 2009 at 1:14 pm

I've been using the used book alerts for over a year. It's my first email read of the morning whenever I get one.

  8.
Wilbert Bishop November 6th, 2009 at 1:15 pm

You guys are all that and a bag of chips!!! I love this store and website!!!

    Keep it up!!!

  9.
    Carrie November 6th, 2009 at 1:15 pm

In-store pickup rocks! I screwed up the process by selecting PayPal, but when I went in to pick up my books, they were ready and it was an easy transaction: like cake! This is one service where it's a benefit to have a local store, because it gives one all of the benefits of online shopping along with the regular shopping.

I'm also quite fond of Indiespensable! What an ingenious idea. I look forward to the selections each time. It takes a lot of the mistakes that can happen out of reading new things. I hope with the popularity of this program/service you'll be able to maintain it!

    Darkkatpouncing November 6th, 2009 at 1:16 pm

I love the sell your used book online feature you have. LOVE IT :)

  11.
    Danielle November 6th, 2009 at 1:16 pm

I love the Mystery Books idea (especially the Craft Project Books -- I am so getting some of those in the near future.)

I have to say though, my favorite thing about Powell's is #1, Used Books. Having the new in with the used gives the buyer so many price options, and a way to get older things, specific editions, out of print books... it's just glorious. I wish I could live in the Burnside store.

  12.
    Tiffany November 6th, 2009 at 1:17 pm

The used book alert is the best! I'm not always in a hurry to read books I'm interested in right when they come out. Getting an email when they come in used not only saves money but reminds me to go get that book!

  13.
    Irk November 6th, 2009 at 1:19 pm

I've used the in-store pickup before and it was really convenient. Just stopped by Burnside and picked up my tarot cards.

I really need to try that mystery books feature!

  14.
    Josh November 6th, 2009 at 1:20 pm

Indiespensible totally caught my eye. I've been a Powell's fan for > 20 years and can't wait for my first shipment!

  15.
Chris Taylor November 6th, 2009 at 1:21 pm

I always like wearing my Powell's t-shirt here in Kansas. People ask what/where and I give them the web address.

  16.
    Amasea November 6th, 2009 at 1:22 pm

My favorite thing about Powell's souvenirs is that, by wearing a shirt or drinking from my Powell's Nalgene (please make the Sci-Fi one again! I've used mine so much all the writing has worn off!), I'm not only advertising the world's greatest bookstore, but I'm also making new friends. I've often connected with people who also love Powell's through your souvenirs, or had people ask me about them and then I get to brag!
Now, if only I still lived in Portland, so I could stop by more often...

  17.
    Michelle November 6th, 2009 at 1:22 pm

    Congratulations everyone!
Happy Birthday Powell's the best book store on the planet(:

  18.
    Lauren November 6th, 2009 at 1:24 pm

Three cheers for free shipping for orders over $50! I'm a college student majoring in literature, and Powell's is there for me at the beginning of each semester. It's a great comfort that I can get my requisite heaps of Proust and Virginia Woolf in used editions AND have them shipped to me for free.

  19.
    Chadwick November 6th, 2009 at 1:25 pm

I love that Powells offers used books. what's not to love about a well-worn paperback that has managed to age with its dignity still intact?

  20.
    Niki November 6th, 2009 at 1:26 pm

My favorite thing about Powell's is your #1 Thing: In store pick-up. Who wants to pay for shipping?!

  21.
    Kelsey November 6th, 2009 at 1:27 pm

The mystery books are awesome! For a dollar?!?!? CRAZY!

  22.
    June November 6th, 2009 at 1:28 pm

I think the Review-a-Day is great! I'm going to sign up for it and I look forward to reading about some great books to read over the winter (and all year for that mater :) )

  23.
    Pattie A. November 6th, 2009 at 1:29 pm

I have been looking longingly at Indiespensables for a few months now and finally signed up for 3 shipments (which I suspect I'll end up extending) yesterday. Can't wait to get the first one!

  24.
    Jessica November 6th, 2009 at 1:33 pm

    Used books rock!

  25.
    Terry November 6th, 2009 at 1:34 pm

Only 15 things? I can think of hundreds of things I love about Powell's. It's the first-stop on our trips to Portland and is a right of passage excursion in joy for our book-loving daughter. All in all, if I have to pick only one thing, I would join the masses and say it's your used books. I may not always find what I'm looking for, but I always find an armload of books I want. (And the used-book alert is neat too!)

  26.
    Christian November 6th, 2009 at 1:36 pm

Signed editions - nothing in the world makes me happier than getting a signed edition of a book at NO EXTRA COST. Of course, I can't lend it out to my sloppy friends, but that's a price I'm willing to pay. You guys are the best.

  27.
    DianaWR November 6th, 2009 at 1:38 pm

    Yay for used books!

  28.
    Molly November 6th, 2009 at 1:39 pm

I absolutely love the "Mystery" books option, and I would never have known if I hadn't seen it on your 15 Things list. It feels like being back in elementary school with grab bags. Oh the mystery! The suspense! So cool :)

  29.
    Stephanie November 6th, 2009 at 1:44 pm

The best thing is that you can sell your own books online and find out what the price is and everything. Love it!

  30.
    Katie November 6th, 2009 at 1:45 pm

I love the Indiespensibles...what great editions for true book lovers!

  31.
    Lisa November 6th, 2009 at 1:45 pm

Mystery Books for a dollar, I'm so in!??! Used Books is always a favorite and keeps me from visiting Powell's over and over again! I love going through the stacks on each and every floor, running around and adding more books to my basket, and smelling the wonderfulness that is a well loved dog eared book. Goodness indeed!

  32.
    Marijah November 6th, 2009 at 1:48 pm

Signed Editions are a great way to get unique gifts for the book-lovers on my list. I've yet to tell any of them that I order 'em from you when they ask how I managed to score them an autographed copy of something.

Hope you don't mind me keeping the sercret to myself!!

  33.
    Jodi November 6th, 2009 at 1:53 pm

I love the Used Book Alert! Being a stay at home Mom, it helps me get the books my daughter wants and I save $!

  34.
    Jen November 6th, 2009 at 1:53 pm

Oh Powell's, how I wish you were closer! Lucky for me you have great customer service and shipping to Canada! Happy Birthday, and keep the awesome surprises like signed editions and quality selections coming!

  35.
    Tara November 6th, 2009 at 1:55 pm

The Used Book Alert is splendid, and I've taken advantage of the Free Shipping numerous times since I live far away (in New Mexico).

  36.
    Deanna November 6th, 2009 at 1:56 pm

When I was little I loved visiting Portland, and not just for candy from Grandma. Used books from Powell's have populated my bookshelves as long as I've been able to read. The amazing adventure that is Powell's helped make Portland my favorite place on Earth!

  37.
    LisaLou November 6th, 2009 at 1:58 pm

I'm not bitter, but I'll take a chance. Go, Powell's!

  38.
    Julie November 6th, 2009 at 1:58 pm

I adore the used books and in-store pick-up.
So great to learn of the used book alert! I'll be using that a lot!
    Yay Powells!!

  39.
    Jeanne November 6th, 2009 at 2:03 pm

You know, I didn't know about Used Book Alerts (or I'd forgotten about it, which is almost, kinda' the same). I'm really going to start taking advantage of that!
    Thanks!

  40.
    amber November 6th, 2009 at 2:03 pm

My husband and I eagerly await each new Indiespensable book shipment. We love it!

  41.
    Corrie November 6th, 2009 at 2:08 pm

You run a very, very dangerous store...in a good way. Would have loved any of those prizes, especially the signed Tracy Kidder book.

  42.
    Zack November 6th, 2009 at 2:09 pm

As Amber's husband, I second her comment! We've been subscribers of Indiespensable since Vol. 4 and we've discovered incredible authors and books through it.

  43.
    Denise November 6th, 2009 at 2:11 pm

I miss Powell's! I moved from Portland to the east coast about 4 years ago and dream about it often! We'll be visiting in January and will for SURE visit Powell's. Can't wait to see you!

  44.
    Maria November 6th, 2009 at 2:17 pm

Gotta check out the mystery books, what fun!

  45.
    Mike November 6th, 2009 at 2:17 pm

Powell's is a big piece of Portland, like brewpubs, coffee shops, rain, trees, and Mt. Hood.

  46.
    Pam November 6th, 2009 at 2:17 pm

    I'm a huge fan of Daily Dose & Review-a-Day. And I wish I was the day 18 winner . . .

  47.
    Felicity November 6th, 2009 at 2:17 pm

During my brief exile outside the Portland area, I took a lot of comfort from #4, Sell Us Your Books Online. But in general, I love #3, the Daily Dose. I have $60 of books just from reviewing books, which I was doing anyway on Goodreads and LibraryThing, and I've gotten new books and gift ideas from the daily email. So many reasons to love Powell's!

  48.
    Linda November 6th, 2009 at 2:18 pm

In store pickup! Fabulous awesome! Also love your newsletters (including the intermission). I've found so many great books to love while readying them. Were the newsletters one of the FIFTEEN? Can't remember.

  49.
    Helena November 6th, 2009 at 2:18 pm

The huge, searchable used book selection that can be shipped to me. It's like having Powell's in my town - with the sole exception that browsing online is not nearly as fun as in the store.
I'm also about to the try the selling books online feature - it sounds pretty nifty.

  50.
    Joseph November 6th, 2009 at 2:21 pm

I would fladly wear a Powell's t-shirt for anyone to see!

  51.
    Kendra November 6th, 2009 at 2:21 pm

Just received our first order of used books in the mail, and my seven year old is telling everyone about how great your store/website is because we can find the out-of-print unicorn and princess books she was looking for.

  52.
    Crystal November 6th, 2009 at 2:23 pm

I love Powell's and their souvenirs. When I visited Portland on my honeymoon I snatched up the Powell's Star Wars logo shirt which gets compliments every time I wear it. Now that I live in Portland I still wear it proudly and still get compliments. Nifty!

  53.
    Michelle November 6th, 2009 at 2:23 pm

I love the used book alerts!

  54.
Fantastic Forrest November 6th, 2009 at 2:24 pm

Powell's, let me count the ways... The used book alert is an awesome feature of Powells.com so I will choose that. But really I love it all. And I can't wait to introduce my friends to the real Powell's when they come to visit.

  55.
    Wendy November 6th, 2009 at 2:25 pm

I was visiting Portland last month and spent hours both Fri and Sat in Powell's! I stocked on some some great used books and all my friends were jealous I got to visit 'the Mecca of books'. :) Thanks Powell's! :)

  56.
    Emma November 6th, 2009 at 2:28 pm

Until this celebration, I never knew about the mystery books! (How did I miss that?) That's such a fun idea. :)

  57.
    Pam November 6th, 2009 at 2:30 pm

I love coming in and browsing the used books in the Technical Bookstore. I even found one of my textbooks for a lot cheaper that way. I don't live in Portland, but I have friends there, and every time I come through I try to stop by to see what new gems are on offer.

  58.
    Stefanie November 6th, 2009 at 2:31 pm

I love the in-store pickup option and of course, the used books.

  59.
    Britton November 6th, 2009 at 2:39 pm

I love the used book alert, too! But I'm also very partial to Powell's blog -- I've found a lot new writers that way.

  60.
Chris Milton November 6th, 2009 at 2:59 pm

I take advantage of Used Book Alert all the time. More than half my purchases are triggered by receiving one.

I subscribe to Indiespensable. I love the selections and the extra stuff inside!

I enjoy reading the Daily Dose, too. Today's was about a book I plan to read, Eric S. Nylund's Mortal Coils. He's an underappreciated author.

  61.
Thom from Seattle November 6th, 2009 at 3:11 pm

I love the more eclectic collection of calendars than anywhere. Russian word-of-the-day? Check! Obscure Math function calendar? Check!

Well, that and hanging out at the technical book store. Go Powells!

  62.
Nancy Foulke November 6th, 2009 at 3:14 pm

I love the used books! Purchased "The Butterfly's Ball" used there about 14 years ago on my first trip to Powell's. So many books so little time!

  63.
    Shannon November 6th, 2009 at 3:20 pm

Oh, used books...how I love thee.

  64.
    Monica November 6th, 2009 at 3:20 pm

I love the in store pick up option. I like to find the books on line when I have the time, and then pick them up at the store instead of paying for shipping. It saves me a ton of time and money. I get the books I want that may not be in the store, but I don't have to pay anything extra.

  65.
    Jaci November 6th, 2009 at 3:23 pm

I LOVE this store!! And I wasn't very familiar with the online aspect, having lived so close to the bookstore itself - this was a great introduction! The used book alert will rock!

  66.
    Danielle November 6th, 2009 at 3:46 pm

I'm a native Oregonian who now (unfortunately) lives in LA. Every time I come to Portland, I stock up on souvenirs (and books!) so I can bring a little bit of Powell's back to LA with me. I wear my Powell's T-shirt with pride and carry my Powell's tote everywhere I go. In my tote bag right now is a used copy of Kate Atkinson's "Behind the Scenes at the Museum," purchased during my last Powell's shopping spree in September!

  67.
    Kate November 6th, 2009 at 3:54 pm

I love all 15 things, but I suppose the used books have to top the list! Everything else usually leads me to those very books, so they're really what's at the heart of it all.

  68.
Marianne Aldrich November 6th, 2009 at 4:42 pm

Free shipping over $50 is my favorite! Such a good excuse to buy a couple more things than I was otherwise going to...

  69.
    Rocza November 6th, 2009 at 4:57 pm

Whoa - I had no idea about the $1 books - and I do craft/art books, so that's an awesome resource. Even if I've been shopping at Powell's for longer than you've had a web presence, and have absolutely NO excuse for not knowing about the mystery books. (Of course I love the free shipping, Powell's swag, and used books. But my credit card doesn't!)

  70.
Cara Holman November 6th, 2009 at 5:01 pm

I like #1 and #15 best. What could be a better combo than used books and free in-store pickup. Glad I live in Portland!

  71.
    Jack November 6th, 2009 at 5:03 pm

The "Mystery" Books, the blog, and Powell's in general are great!

  72.
    Bladerunner November 6th, 2009 at 5:09 pm

I love the In-Store Pickup. As a user of public transportation, I really appreciate being able to find the books I want online then pick them up from a single location, rather than have to bus or mooch rides from SE Portland to Beaverton to the Airport and back. Thanks for the In-Store Pickup option!

  73.
    Stacy November 6th, 2009 at 5:18 pm

I LOVE used and rare books and Powell's has the best selection of both!

  74.
    Eric November 6th, 2009 at 5:19 pm

Used books with in-store pick up option rocks! I usually find a couple of impulse buys along the way too. Good for Powells and good for me!

  75.
Madam Pince November 6th, 2009 at 5:26 pm

The Daily Dose and Review-a-Day are just fabulous. I've been introduced to so many books I'd have never picked up otherwise, and I've been quite lucky in getting book credits for my DD reviews! Thanks for the encouragement, Powell's!

  76.
    Carrie A November 6th, 2009 at 5:34 pm

I once got a used book from Powell's that Amazon still hasn't ever heard of. I was offered 10 times your selling price within the week, but I still own it. There are always lots of treasures at Powell's, and no one's trash!

  77.
    dancinfool November 6th, 2009 at 5:40 pm

Powell's made my move to Portland the best move I've ever made. Thanks!

  78.
Danielle Gutierrez Casey November 6th, 2009 at 5:59 pm

I like the signed editions! I made picking up books for my husband's birthday so much more special by finding the books he wanted - autographed by his favorite authors! Powell's is our Treasure Island. We can't go to Portland without stopping there... Sometimes, I think we go to Portland just to GO to Powell's. We wish we could live in Powell's City of Books.

  79.
    Sarah November 6th, 2009 at 6:29 pm

Indiespensable is a really cool idea. I love surprise gifts! I'll have to check that one out.

  80.
    Heidi M November 6th, 2009 at 6:39 pm

I love the used book alert. Thanks for offering it.

  81.
    Jen November 6th, 2009 at 6:40 pm

Selling our extra books to Powells online before we moved the 2000 miles to Portland was fantastic - and led to some nice home-warming gifts for our new bookshelves once we were settled here :)

  82.
sarah bagley November 6th, 2009 at 7:56 pm

I've moved away from Portland, so I'm so sad that I can't do in-store pickup anymore. My friends are all jealous that once I lived in the city of the awesomest bookstore ever. The fact that you ship for free, though, makes up for some of the sadness.

  83.
    dephal November 6th, 2009 at 7:56 pm

Used book alert is the best. As are the used books in general--back when I was in college (when dinosaurs roamed the earth and nobody was online), as soon as I got my reading lists I'd always head straight for Powell's to find my books used. Now that I'm exiled to California, I like the souvenirs and free shipping!

  84.
    Cindy November 6th, 2009 at 8:30 pm

Although i didn't win the biggie :(, Powell's is still my favorite place to spend some time and Is a great place to take people visiting PDX. God, I love this town!

  85.
    Tina November 6th, 2009 at 8:43 pm

Used books, for the win! One person's junk is my treasure. I didn't even know about the Mystery books; I'll definitely be trying that out. Happy Birthday, Powell's!

  86.
    Kathleen November 6th, 2009 at 9:22 pm

used book alerts, free shipping and staff picks!

  87.
    Jayna November 6th, 2009 at 9:29 pm

I didn't know about the $1 'Mystery' Books - that is so cool. I'll definitely have to round off my next order with a couple of those! Surprises are always fun. :)

  88.
    Cindy November 6th, 2009 at 10:10 pm

I love love love the Daily Dose! I've found some of my favorite books through this email, and who doesn't like the chance to win Powell's credit? :D

  89.
    Anna November 6th, 2009 at 11:48 pm

I've actually used the in-store pickup feature. I tend to be a procrastinator, and waited until a day or two before a friend's birthday, to buy a specific vintage, poetry book. Thank goodness, I was able to run down there and pick it up! Thanks so much!!!!!

I can't believe I haven't heard of indiespensibles! I was all set to list Daily Dose as my current favorite but now there's competition! Powell's Books, I LOVE YOU!!!

All this talk of Powell's makes me homesick. Good thing I'm coming home in January! BTW, I think the used book alert is one of the best tools of the site, and since I've used it I've been able to grab a couple out-of-print books that way!

I really like the Review a Day email. I have discovered many new authors. Thanks.

Since I no longer live in Oregon and can't make it to a local Powell's I adore the free shipping for purchases over $50. I just love that decision - very smart business move and that combined with the used book alerts keeps me loyal to Powell's!

I too am bummed and mostly I am grateful: for another chance to win, because I work about 10 blocks from Powell's on Burnside and can usually find a reason to wander over at least once a week, and because it's the BEST place to find a used copy or a out-of-print book ANYWHERE!

LOVE the New Favorites. It's like the book is standing at attention with shiny buttons and a fresh crease, saying "Yeah. I'm good!"

I already love the Daily Dose, and selling books online...but the phrase "Mystery Book" has inflamed my imagination as little else has before. That cute little question mark graphic seals the deal--it's just so...quizzical. Mmm, Mystery Book. Mystery Books! Yowza.

OK, I love the Daily Dose, the fact that I was able to ship a huge box of books and gifts back home to Virginia right from the store, for free, on a recent visit. And I love that I could stand in the middle of the store that evening, post my status to Facebook and have all my friends tell me they were jealous! One even improved on my status; he told me I was in Nerdvana.

This was a great contest! I hope they do it again, though hope it's before the next 15 year anniversary!

I love Powell's because I can often find books there that I cannot find anywhere else. Keep up the good work!

Free shipping! I really hate shipping charges and if all we have to do is wait to order until we have $50 worth of books, it's well worth the wait. It's why I don't shop at other on-line book stores.

The used books and book alerts are among the top of my favorite things about Powells, but truly, living in a rural area, I treasure being able to order from Powell's online--so easy, and great service.

It's hard to be bitter about not winning when the next Indiespensable is a signed Dave Eggers book. Not bitter at all. Just a little sad. Maybe more than just a little. A bit. Just a bit sad...or bitter. Just kind of bitter. Not extremely upset, just sort of unhappy I didn't win. Not the life affecting unhappy, I just should not have moved from Iowa, apparently the odds were better to win if I still lived there.....

I'm not gonna lie: I am SO bummed I didn't win something! You guys and gals have so many fans, I just didn't stand a chance. Yet, I remain your loyal blog reader/book buyer and trader/Daily Dose recipient, etc., etc. Happy Birthday dammit! Hugs to every last one of you...
