Lost: Update On J. Wood

We have another update on J. Wood, who wrote to us about his health condition:

I had a relapse a few weeks ago when I got sick. Virus from my wife, computer getting hacked, and then midterms were enough to trigger a relapse that I've been fighting off for a month.

I wish I could do more right now. I'm teaching two courses this semester, including one with 115 students, and when I've tried to get down to Lost work, I've had nothing left, no matter what ideas I've had rolling around in my head.

We'll keep you posted — and continue to wish J. the best health possible!

You're doing O.K. This disease is a bitch. Keep fighting it & you'll win.

Miss Gretchen March 23rd, 2009 at 3:45 pm

J, hang in there, we're all rooting for you. There are only a few episodes left, and if you had it in you to give us a recap of your thoughts when the season is over, that would be fantastic enough for me!

    Eko March 23rd, 2009 at 4:06 pm

Mods - muchas gracias for the update.

Mr Wood - get well soon! We eagerly await your analyses... watching lost this season isn't the same without them. Your weekly commentary has been a tremendous enrichment to my LOST experience these past couple seasons. Hope you're back on the level soon enough to provide more enlightenment as S5 wraps--keeping you in my prayers until you resurface here.

Mods - thanks for the update. It is very much appreciated. Think about posting this blog (and comments) in a easy readable/printable format.

    J. Wood - good luck. We all care about you and your health - feel better and take it easy.

I second what Miss Gretchen state above.

    Take care!

    xoxo

Handsome Smitty March 23rd, 2009 at 5:20 pm

Analyses-Smanalyses - take care of yourself, dude. Your family. Your students.

You showed us the way, good enough.

    J. Wood, your writing may have drawn us to you initially, but i know I'm not alone in saying that our affection has you has grown past your Lost analysis.

Get well soon. You are missed.

J - Sorry to hear about the relapse and your generally craptastic month so far! I hope you feel better very soon. I also have missed your analysis of each episode, but I know that your analysis of the past few episodes are worth the wait!! :)

    Sara March 24th, 2009 at 7:59 am

J -- So glad to hear you're as well as can be, I hope you understand our worry. We are patient, and happy to wait until you have enough strength and focus to write some more. Just keep us up to date on your health, if you would, and we're sending you good karma.

Miss your analysis, man! Hope you feel better soon!

Thanks for the update--wishing you a speedy recovery and good health to follow!

    DCMatt March 24th, 2009 at 12:35 pm

    Hang in there, J.

I miss your analysis, but am more concerned for your health. It's just a tv show, after all. And you're a HUMAN.

  12.
    Peden March 24th, 2009 at 2:17 pm

Hang in there champ, and get well!

All your smarts will be enjoyed, even if they are a little late to the party :)

    j.b. March 24th, 2009 at 5:23 pm

J., I hope your students know how lucky they are. As one from the academic world myself, I can recognize what a rarity of a great teacher and inspiration you must be to them all. Come back and chat when you can, if you so choose. In the meantime, I hope you're pleased with the online community that's built up around your blog. Keep fighting the good fight.

    Jaqui March 24th, 2009 at 7:36 pm

Thank you J for all of your insights. I am as drawn to them as I am to the show itself! And the good news is that you have given us so much to continue to chew on that we can come back here and read and read and read. When you're up for more, so are we. Meanwhile, save your energy for you, your family and your students. I agree with j.b., your students are all so very lucky. And I echo Handsome Smitty, you've shown us the way.

Peace, health and love to you, Jaq

Chris Hyde March 25th, 2009 at 5:16 pm

I miss the updates, but that's just purely selfish since they're always such a dang good read. Hope ya get better and can put some thoughts together on this season whenever you get around to it. But that can wait until you get back on track. Good luck.

    DTinSF March 25th, 2009 at 6:05 pm

What matters is your health. Just think, someday, when you've beaten MS to an ugly pulp and left it at the curb, how phenomenal that next Lost book will be. Hang in there and take care of yourself--rest, eat well, smile.

Miss your blog updates, but mostly want you to get your strength back and get totally well. Warm thoughts to you.

    Sosolost March 26th, 2009 at 6:23 am

Thanks for the update. I had actually been more anxious about an update on J's health than seeing a new blog headline!

Take care of yourself first and foremost!

    We miss you!

    Morrick March 26th, 2009 at 4:17 pm

Wishing J. a prompt recovery! I look forward to reading your amazing writings and insights. Hang in there, J. -- it's going to be fine.

We do appreciate the update, Powell's Moderator, thanks.

J Wood: I hope you don't feel stressed by the keen interest in your health and your posts expressed by the folks who participate in this blog. You have plenty to look after these days; just take care to look after yourself first & foremost.

    Warmest thoughts to you!

    J Wood,

Your posts are like Terence Malick movies, so dense and glorious, I'll take 'em whenever I can get 'em. Get well soon. Your loyal Lost disciples miss you, but patiently await your return.

    Keelay March 27th, 2009 at 12:34 pm

It's just good to know what's going on - feel better.

    Well said Handsome Smitty!

J, we will be waiting patiently for your triumphant return. As Lost fans we know time is only relative. The season will end too soon. We have all summer and fall to catch up. It would be nice to have some of your posts to get us through the dog days of summer.

    take care

Get well soon, J. We all miss your fantastic posts and know that when you are able to get back to them they will be great!

I agree with Handsome Smitty, too. Fuggettabout us! Get well!

Thanks for the heads up, mod.

sorry to hear J Wood is ill, i wish him the best.

but here's a crazy idea Powell's: this is obviously a very popular part of your site. Why not find a fill in writer until J is ready to come back? Seems like it would be pretty easy. Not finding someone as good, but close enough, right? There are tons of Lost recaps online, but you've got a good market on the literary angle here. Going to lose a lot of eyeballs on your site and potential click throughts to books mentioned.

    Pedro March 30th, 2009 at 7:16 am

Really want to send my best wishes to you and I hope you feel better soon. I do miss your excellent writings on Lost but let's face it you health is much more important than me missing your blog. Take care.

Thanks for the update! Probably none of us has actually met you, but you can tell we are all worried about you, and not just because we miss your awesome posts! I know I'm not the only one praying for your recovery and for energy enough to do the top priority things in your life, as well as the extraneous things like LOST posts :-)

    crycepaul April 6th, 2009 at 8:01 am

Thanks for taking the time to update us.

We are happy that you are OK (to say the least), but we are fine. Your health is so much more important than a TV show and we know you have responsibilities.

Be well, take care of your self and when you feel up to it we can discuss the DVD episodes of Lost. :)

Thanks and be well J. Wood

Miss your insight. It's as though I'm missing half an episode without reading what you saw that I didn't.

    Good Vibrations.

    J. -

Here's hoping that you feel better and get your strength back up to speed. I have been there myself, in a different way, and no one truly knows how difficult it can be. But you are a brilliant, thoughtful person, and, as "Walt" said to Locke: "You have work to do." (And I mean that in a good way.)

Just checking in to see if by any chance there was an update on J's health. I hope 2010 brings him improved health and happiness and brings his wonderful recaps and writings back to us!
