A Book That Will Make You Feel Rich

Poor People by William T. Vollmann

Reviewed by Ryan D'Agostino
Esquire

"Here is one thing you should know about William Vollmann: Esquire once hired him to write a story about the Khmer Rouge, but he blew off the assignment and went whoring across southeast Asia instead. (We published it anyway.) Here is another thing: Four years ago, he released a seven-volume manifesto (3,352 pages) on the subject of violence, which was his 13th book. Number 14, the novel Europe Central, won the National Book Award in 2005...." Read the entire Esquire Review.

I hate the macho tone of the beginning part of the review of this book! What, only a guy tough enough to blow off a writing assignment and go "whoring" is tough enough to look into the faces of poor folk?

Give me a break!!! I normally love the reviews you carry, but this seems horribly pathetic pandering to the urban male readers of "Esquire"...boy, oh, boy, we better find a way to sex up these poor folk, etc., etc., or else nobody's gonna read our mag.

Not to defend "Esquire" too much, but I read the intro more as an attempt to establish the rather unconventional career of W. Vollmann than as any attempt to define his machoism. I mean, that he wrote a 3,000+ page tract on violence isn't exactly a supporting premise for alpha maledom either.
