Synopses & Reviews
Butch Bakery got its start in 2009 when David Arrick started wondering why the cupcakes sold in bakeries all around New York City are always pink and yellow and covered in flowers and pastel sprinkles, or more precisely, why they are so feminine, and why no one was making cupcakes for men. Soon after, he left his Wall Street real estate law firm job in hopes of creating a line of masculine-themed and styled cupcakes, and Butch Bakery was born. The flavors included clever combinations of rum, bacon, coffee, whisky, stout beer, tequila, and more, with decorative themes like military camouflage, hounds tooth, and plaid. The reaction from the media to the cupcakes was astounding. First there was a feature in Daily Candy. Then came interviews for ABC News, Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, and The Wall Street Journal. And then he started making appearances on The Huckabee Show, Fox Business America's Nightly Scorecard (to appear as a regular guest panelist), and even Rachael Ray, after which he was asked to do more guest spots. The mail-order cupcake business grew so fast, he had to temporarily shut down in January and move into a much bigger kitchen space so he could keep up with the incredible demand. He's even produced a TV show pilot and is now working in partnership with a top producer of shows for Food Network to find a home for a reality series because there is so much excitement about his company and the attorney-turned-run-away-successful-baker story behind it. The cupcake cookbook category has proven to be one of the most reliable in the several years, but the masculine angle will help this book stand out from the pack.
